Carrollton dominates St. Paul\'s Relays

It was Carrollton of Georgia\'s day to shine as it ran away with
the boys\' and girls\' titles in the St. Paul\'s Relays at E.E.
Delaney Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Carrollton defeated McGill-Toolen 93-73 to win the girls\'
division. Murphy was third with 37 points and UMS-Wright fourth
with 34. On the boys\' side, Carrollton routed McGill-Toolen 101 to
48, with UMS-Wright third with 47 and Murphy with 45.
Mandy Phillips and Justin Jones were the standouts for Carrollton.
Phillips ran a leg on the girls\' 4x100 relay team -- which edged
B.C. Rain 50.8 seconds to 50.9 -- and also ran legs on the
victorious 4x200 relay (1:49.2) and the third place in the
4x400-meter relay, as well as competing on the third-place
long-jump relay, which jumped 43 feet, 2 inches, behind
McGill-Toolen (45-5) and LeFlore (43-11).
Jones ran legs on the victorious boys\' 4x100-meter relay (42.8),
the 4x200-meter relay (1:30.6) and the second place 4x400-meter
relay (3:27.9). He was also on the second-place long-jump relay,
which finished second to Murphy 60-7 to 59-4.
Carrollton also won the girls 4x300-meter girls\' relay (3:06.9),
the 4x100-meter hurdles (71.3), the shot put relay (86-7 2) and
the triple jump relay (94-9), as well as the boys\' 4x110-meter
relay (62.3), triple jump relay (124-10), and a record-setting
performance in the 4x300 hurdles (2:45.9), which broke the old
record of 2:49.9 set by Blount in 1997.
The best individual performance came from Williamson\'s Arthur
Davis, who ran a 47.5 400-meter split on the Lions\' victorious
sprint medley relay team, which won in 3:40.4. He also brought the
Lions back from a 35-meter deficit on the anchor leg of the 4x400,
running a 46.5 split to lead the Lions to victory in 3:27.6.
Williamson\'s boys also won the 4x800 in 8:35.2, while Murphy won
the girls\' 4x800 (10:31), the girls\' 4x400 (4:20.0) and the boys\'
high jump relay (17-2). St. Paul\'s won the girls\' 4x1,600 in
23:34.9, while McGill-Toolen won three other girls\' relay events
-- the pole vault (25-8), high jump relay (14-2) and broke its own
record in the discus relay, throwing 273-7 to break the old record
of 252-5 set in 2000.
Pensacola Catholic swept both distance medley races -- the girls
in 13:23.4, and the boys in 10:51.0 and also won the boys 4x1,600
(19:41.7), while Mandeville won the girls\' sprint medley in
4:27.7.
Two individual records fell as B.C. Rain\'s Courtney Golston broke
the girls\' 300-meter hurdles mark with a time of 45 seconds flat,
breaking the old record of 45.8 set in 1993. Davidson\'s Counsuella
Hamilton long jumped 17-11 to break the old record of 17-10 set
two years ago. Blount broke the boys\' shot record with combined
throws of 142-0, which broke Daphne\'s 141-8 set in 1995.
UMS-Wright scored one of the biggest upsets of the meet when it
defeated Mandeville and McGill-Toolen in the boys\' pole vault
relay. UMS-Wright\'s combined height was 34-0, while Mandeville was
33-0 and McGill- Toolen 32-6. The Bulldogs also won the boys\'
discus relay with combined throws of 361-7.
