Woods\' 6.41 at LSU is new Alabama all-time best

BATON ROUGE, LA - Ladarius Woods, Josh Pawlik, Chris Patton, and the Mountain Brook men's 4x800m team started off 2005 with wins Saturday on Day Two of the LSU Invitational.

Ladarius Woods of Homewood clocked 6.41 to win the 55m dash. The time is now the fastest FAT (fully-automatic timed) performance ever by an Alabama sprinter. The previous mark of 6.42 belonged to Titus Ryan, who set the 6A indoor record in 2002. Woods can become the 5A record holder if he runs within 0.10s of his LSU mark at the state championships in February, as John Carroll's Randall Scott currently holds the record at 6.51.

Wood's Homewood teammate Josh Pawlik led a three-man sweep of the men's 1600m race. Pawlik took the tape in 4:25.36, followed by Lee Bailey of Mountain Brook (4:33) and Jason McMillan of Pelham (4:37). After a disappointing junior year that left him with just one top-three finish in state competition, Pawlik looks to bounce back with a strong senior campaign in 2005.

Alabama athletes also swept the mens high jump competition. After David Clyburn of Pelham and Chris Patton of Northridge both cleared 6'6" on equal attempts and failed at 6'8", Patton won by clearing 6'7" in a jump-off while Clyburn settled for second. Tyler Walker of Tuscaloosa County was 3rd (6'4") and Patton's Northridge teammate Jason Watson took 4th (6'2").

Mountain Brook's mens 4x800m relay team displayed rare early-season form, combining for an 8:11.81 effort in their win.
