Who says you get slower with age?
At the Cullman Invitational, one of the oldest cross country races in the state, a handful
of the top 5K times run in the state were produced. In the varsity girls race, Arab sophomore
and defending 6A state champion Jennifer Thompson added another big invitational victory
to her short yet stellar cross country career in a seasonal best time of 18:57. She was followed
by Jill Bryant of Scottsboro (19:14), Emily Green (Scottsbor-19:41), Linda Scavarda (Cullman--19:50),
and Jessi Gross (Scottsboro (19:56), putting all of the top 5 runners under the 20:00 mark. Placing
three runners in the top 5 was the key to the Scottsboro girls' 31-114 win over second place Pleasant Valley.
Defending Cullman Invitational mens' champion
and course record holder Matt Wilson led from line to line to defend his title as the King of Cullman.
Although he fell 9 seconds short of his old course record of 15:33, Wilson was very pleased with his time
considering that the race this year is over a month earlier in the season schedule. Although he
had a large lead at the half-way point of the race, Wilson was challenged late by a long surge
from Grissom's Adam Puett who finished second (15:47). James Guthrie (Scottsboro--16:23) was third,
followed by Jeff Turner of Grissom and Lawrence County senior Heath White. Scottsboro won the team
competition with a score of 56, while Grissom took second with 82.
