The American Christian Academy has moved up to 3A with as of the 2012 AHSAA reclassifications. AlabamaRunners spoke with Coach Tiller about how his team is shaping up this summer.
Alabama Runners: Your girls team won 1A/2A last year and has now moved up to the 3A classification. Has this had any effect on the team?
Coach Tiller: Both 1A/2A and 3A have great teams. We move from competing against Holy Spirit and Cold Springs to going head to head against Bayside Academy and TR Miller. A larger classification means going against teams with more talented athletes, more experienced coaches, and nicer facilities. We realize we must work hard just to be competitive. I am excited because the kids know what is in front of them and they have embraced the challenge.
Alabama Runners: How does the team look? We are young.
Coach Tiller: We have 1 Senior and 1 Junior in our top 6. We have made some reasonable progress this summer but I won't know how our training will translate to race times until Chickasaw Trails on September 8th. I have seen a better attitude this season than last. We are having a lot more fun. We don't feel the pressure as we have in prior years.
Alabama Runners: Any new additions or surprises?
Coach Tiller: In distance running, very few new athletes can have an immediate impact on a squad. I am proud of the increased maturity of some of the younger girls from last years team. They seem to understand their role.
Alabama Runners: What are your goals or key meets?
Coach Tiller: We have always been about what happens on the 2nd Saturday in November. Everything. Every workout, every team meeting, every meet is about making sure we are ready to compete at State.
