Senior Sendoff: Hunter Nails - Southside Gadsden

Athlete Name: Hunter Nails

School: Southside High School

What was your most memorable meet and why?

The Hewitt Trussville Invitational because my 4x400m relay broke the school record by 5 seconds.

Where did you face your biggest competition?

At all of the State Championships and at large Birmingham area meets

Out of all of your high school accomplishments, which stands out the most and why?

Winning the 800m outdoor state title my senior year.  My favorite race is the 800m, I pour much of myself into training for it. And I think it is one of the funnest races in track and field.

If you could do it all over again, what would you change about your running career in high school?

I wish I would've worked harder and dedicated more time to training. I also wish I would've been smarter about injuries, specially how to avoid them.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome during your HS Track career?

All of my high school career I have trained all alone, and that in itself is a immense challenge. That combined with the fact that I have no rubber track at my school; I would have to drive across town to another high school just to put my spikes on for a workout.

What will you miss the most?

I will miss my teammates the most. Over these last few seasons, I have gotten closer to the guys on my team, and we've had a blast this last season. My senior year season of track and field has been my favorite period of high school because of my teammates, and I am so grateful for that.

Do you have any advice for younger athletes?

Be smart about injuries. And simply have fun. Many races I would worry about the outcome of a race even before I started warming up. It would take away most of the fun of the race. So just have fun and simply trust in your training.

What are your post-high school or college plans?

I will be running cross country and track for the University of Alabama-Huntsville where I'll also be majoring in aerospace engineering.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to say thank you to my coaches-Philip Harrell, and Coach Cargill. Without you Philip, I wouldn't be half the athlete I am today. You have invested in me so much of your time and for that I am so thankful. Thank you Coach Cargill for all the support you've given me through all these years. I've come to love being a Southside panther because of you and your team. Thank you.
