McGill boys and girls lead county track meet

McGill-Toolen\'s girls grabbed 36 points in the first two events and
took the first-day lead in the Mobile County Track and Field Championships at Theodore High School Wednesday afternoon, while the
Yellow Jacket boys were in a tight battle with UMS-Wright and Mary Montgomery.
Action continues today at 1 p.m.
McGill-Toolen led the girls\' competition with 76 points, followed by
UMS Wright with 55 and LeFlore 33, while the Yellow Jacket boys were on top with 54.5 points, followed by UMS-Wright with 44 and
surprising Mary G. Montgomery with 40.
The Lady Jackets got off to a good start in the discus with Melissa Holtz winning the event with a toss of 95 feet, 5 inches and Emily
Miller taking second with a 88- effort. The Lady Jackets also got a 1-2 finish in the pole vault, with Rhiannon Jaet clearing 11 feet, 1
inch and Natalie Neely 9-0.
McGill\'s Elizabeth Wancowicz also scored an upset victory over St. Paul\'s Tara Lenn in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:23.31.
McGill-Toolen\'s boys forged ahead with a strong effort in the 300-meter hurdles by Chris Lyon, who finished second to Blount\'s
Brandon Jones. Jones ran 40.93 seconds, while Lyon ran 40.95. The Yellow Jackets also got first and third in the pole vault from Thomas
Fowlkes (14-0) and Alex Morris (13-0).
UMS-Wright, paced by Forress Rayford\'s victory in a new event--the turbo javelin (155-2 2), also got a victory in the high jump from
Ashley Wright (6-8), and a second from Rayford in the pole vault (13-6).
Mary Montgomery stayed close, thanks in part to a strong 1600 run by Jeremiah Carter as he defeated Murphy\'s Steve Mouton, 4:31.36 to
4:33.16. Carter hung behind Mouton for the first three laps, then moved alongside him in the backstretch and took the lead in the final 120 meters.
Carter ran the 1600 for the first time after running in relays for most of the season.
\"I\'m glad I was able to run as well as I did,\" he said. \"I was just drafting off him (Mouton) and trying to see what he would do. I was trying to do the best I can.\"
Vigor finished 1-2 in the boys\' triple jump, with James Pettway going 43-9 and Abraham Jones jumping 43-8. Williamson, meanwhile, won both
400 meter dashes-- Arthur Davis, continuing his domination in the boys\' 400, winning in 47.77, while Ebony Monigan won the girls\' 400 in 60.21.
Bryant\'s Bobby O\'Bannon won the boys shot put with a throw of 49-1 as well as the discus in 139-6, while B.C. Rain\'s Courtney Golston
continued her streak of great races in the girls\' 300-meter hurdles, winning in 44.16.
