McGill-Toolen used strong field-event performances to win the Hunt
Trophy as the team with the top combined boys\' and girls\' scores
in the Southeastern Relays at UMS-Wright\'s Ervin S. Cooper Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets finished second to UMS-Wright 69-66 in the
girls\' division and defeated Mary Montgomery 66-52 in the boys\'
division for 132 points. UMS-Wright had 117 combined points for
second and Murphy was third with 99.

Yellow Jackets coach Angelo Harris said while his team did not
have remarkable performances, several athletes stepped up.

\"We were able to do it without a whole lot of people winning
individual events,\" he said. \"I\'m proud of the kids, because we
had a lot of illness and injuries, especially on the boys\' side.\"

The Yellow Jackets had five individual winners -- Thomas Fowlkes
in the boys\' pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches), Rhiannon Jaet in the
girls\' pole vault (10-0), Emily Miller in the girls\' high jump
(5-0), David Johnson in the boys\' high jump (5-10) and Melissa
Holtz in the girls\' discus (100-4).

McGill-Toolen, though, got enough seconds and thirds to win the
overall title for the second straight year.

B.C. Rain\'s Courtney Golston and Davidson\'s Cornelius Cunningham
were the meet\'s outstanding performers.

Golston won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.45 seconds, ran legs on
the winning 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 relays and was second in the
long jump (16-2).

Cunningham ran a 2:03 800-meter leg to help Davidson win the
sprint medley in 3:43.78, ran a leg on the 4-by-100, where
Davidson finished second to Vigor 43.40 to 43.72, and ran a leg on
the winning 4-by-200 relay.

Daphne, using Kirby Patterson\'s strong 800-meter leg, won the
girls\' sprint medley in 4:28.03.

UMS-Wright won three girls\' relays -- the 4-by-800 (10:13.04),
distance medley relay (14:11.26), and used Edra Finley\'s anchor
leg to beat T.R. Miller in the 4-by-400 4:17.32 to 4:17.98.

Blount won the final race of the day -- the boys\' 4-by-400 -- in
3:36.06.

Two of the more intriguing races were in the boys\' 4-by-800 and
distance-medley relays, in which Murphy\'s Steve Mouton anchored
both races.

Mary Montgomery and Theodore were battling for first in the
4-by-800 with Murphy some 20 meters behind. But Mouton\'s 2:03
anchor split enabled Murphy to win in 8:31.26.

In the distance-medley relay, Mouton and McGill-Toolen\'s Chad
Carley ran virtually side by side for three laps before Mouton
broke into a sprint on the final lap and won going away. Murphy
won that race in 11:28..

Kelvin Robinson won the boys\' 110-meter high hurdles in 15.89,
while other boys\' individual winners were Murphy\'s Elmer Cyprian
in the long jump (19-11), St. Paul\'s John Brigham in the 1,600
(4:43.97), UMS-Wright\'s Boudouin Atchison in the discus (137-8)
and Blount\'s Terrence Smith in the shot (46-5).

Other girls\' winners included Blount\'s Navaria Evans in the shot
put (34-8), St. Paul\'s Tara Lenn in the 1,600 (5:29.51) and
Davidson\'s Consuella Hamilton in the girls\' long jump (16-8).
