Throwers lead way at Challenge of Champions

Opelika's Zach Clayton and Leeds' Tiphanie Baker both doubled in the shot put and discus events as throwers led Alabama's efforts at the annual Challenge of Champions in Mobile.

Tiphanie Baker's 38' 10.25" performance in the shot put outdistanced 2nd place by almost a foot, and her winning mark of 123' 4.5" was more than six feet better than her nearest competitor. On the men's side, Opelika's Zach Clayton was arguably the most dominant performer in the entire meet. In addition to bettering his own meet record in the discus (now set at a prodigious 190' 3"), Clayton was the easy winner in the shot put, too, with a 58' 9" mark.

The winner of the women's javelin also hails from the Heart of Dixie; McGill-Toolen's Angela McCord just missed the meet record with her winning toss of 129' 9", giving Alabama wins in 5 of the 6 throwing competitions.

Other Alabama winners in the invitational division were:

  • Phelon Jones (McGill-Toolen). TJ - 50-04.50 (MEET RECORD)
  • Lee Baily (Mountain Brook). 800m - 1:55.55
  • Kirsten Richards (Hoover) - LJ - 18-02
  • Smiths Station HS - 4x800m - 8:00.75
