Girls Athlete of the Week: Racquel Moses, Milford Mill, indoor track

The senior capped her high school indoor career with three gold medals at the New Balance Nationals Indoor championships in New York City. Running in the Emerging Elites division, Moses won the 55-meter hurdles (24.8 seconds) and the 200 (8.02 seconds) and also ran on the Millers' winning 800 relay team. In helping the Millers finish second at the Class 3A state championship meet last month, Moses won the 200 and ran on the winning 800 relay team. She was second in the 55 hurdles, and her 1,600 relay team also finished second. An Honor Roll student, Moses has signed to run for Mississippi. (via baltimoresun.com)

Dondre Echols: Potomac sprinter places second at national meet, still not satisfied

Greg Dohler/The Gazette Dondre Echols of the Potomac High School track team currently holds the fastest time in the nation in 55 hurdles.   Dondre Echols crouches low, his electric green and black Nike spikes placed firmly against the starting block. He remembers his heart pounding, but he pushes it out. It's just him. All is quiet in his zone. Then the gun sounds and he's exploding off the blocks. (via www.gazette.net)

NBIN 4x800s - Rhodes burns rubber, Stotans surprise

Brooklyn's Boys & Girls High School was right at home in New York City tonight at the Washington Heights Armory. The Kangaroos, long known for their success in the sprint relays (they are defending champs in the 1600 meter relay), notched a new title on their belt with an exhilarating come-from-behind win in the 3200 meter relay.

New Balance Indoor Nationals - VA Saturday Highlights

Quick highlights and summaries of day two performances (primarily top 10 finishes) from Virginians at the 2012 New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City.   The Western Branch girls won their program's third national title in the shuttle hurdles in the past four years as the Lady Bruins bettered their own facility record time of 32.73 from one year ago in a winning performance of 32.31. With two of the faster performers in state history in the 55 meter hurdles between Group AAA state champ Taranisha Taylor and state runner-up Tiffany Ellick as well as depth beyond them, it was really on question if they could run a clean race in order to score another national title ring in the event. Averaging their time for four legs equates to roughly a 8.07 split each.   Read more highlights and performances by Virginians from Saturday at the New Balance Indoor Nationals

NBIN Boys 4xMile Wrap-up - An Island State Shocker

All morning, the buzz at the Armory around the boys 4 x mile was focused on two powerhouse programs that have dominated distance running in recent years. It was a two-horse race, the chatter went, and whichever favorite emerged – Shaker High School or New Jersey's Christian Brothers Academy – would also own a new national record. New Balance Indoor Nationals - VA Friday Highlights

No All-American finishes from VA in the championship events on Friday at the Armory, but Sophie Chase and the Lake Braddock girls gave it a great run but were just off a sub 12 minute time and school record in the DMR. MileSplit XC Journal: Angel Piccirillo, Homer Center - Entry #11 - March 6th

Angel Piccirillo enters her senior season as one of the top distance runners in Pennsylvania, as well as the U.S. Bursting on the scene as a sophomore - Piccirillo won her first of two indoor state mile titles, first of two outdoor 1600 meter titles and first of two Penn Relays COA titles. So far in her senior year, she has added a second state title in AA cross country, and a Northeast Region title and 2nd Foot Locker Finalist qualifier.

Athlete Spotlight: Adam Visokay

Photo by Ryan Kelly   Adam Visokay did not start taking running seriously until his junior year and the rest of Virginia is grateful for his late start or he would have left many more runners in his wake of his furious final lap kick at 3200 meters. After catching everyone off guard last indoor season with a surprise runner-up finish in the 3200 meter run, the UVA recruit Visokay has turned it on at the end when it matters each following season. With a sub 60 second last lap in last spring's VHSL Group AAA State Outdoor Championships, Visokay was able to run down the two pre-race favorites for his first state championship in a 9:09 PR. This fall, Visokay ran for team instead of individual glory for much of the season with one of the top ranked cross country teams in Virginia. However, after a second place team finish and third place individual finish at the state cross country meet behind two eventual Foot Locker finalists in Ahmed Bile and Sean McGorty, Albemarle coach Buz Male let his star runner loose at the NIke Cross Nationals Southeast regional in Cary, North Carolina. Visokay unleashed a 5K PR of 15:10 at the Southeast Regional to place second and earn the trip to Oregon for the national race. In Portland, Visokay showed that he had another level of performance or gear in him as he placed 10th (15:37) in a field including many of the nation's best distance runners to rival the top 15 performances by McGorty and Bile at the Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego. This weekend at the New Balance Indoor Nationals, Visokay once again gets an opportunity to measure up against the nation's elite at the two mile distance following a second state title in his high school career with a 9:15 3200 PR run at the indoor state championships on February 25th. MileStat.com interviewed Visokay, the two-time state champion at 3200 meters, prior to his indoor nationals race.

Coach editorial: The push for indoor track

Since my running days at Furman, I have been fascinated by running on the oval of an indoor track.  The short fast races, the quick tight turns, the sound of the starter’s pistol echoing off the walls and ceiling, and the opportunity to compete during the winter months was an exciting time in my life.  When I started coaching, I wanted my athletes to have the same experiences, so I would take many of them off to Knoxville or Clemson or Johnson City or anywhere close where other high school athletes would compete against us.  The idea of new, indoor school records, traveling to new cities in a different venue, and much better performances in May brought many athletes out for track and field that may never have come out before.  But rules in South Carolina were either changed or more strictly enforced and the opportunities to do these meets started slipping away.

Athlete Spotlight: David Johnson

Photo by Andrew Kicinski   Coming from a family of great jumpers including his father as one of his coaches and his older brother Anthony as high school outdoor nationals champion and older sister Joyce as a past Group AA state champion, David Johnson had to leap in some big footsteps with his accomplished family name at Charlottesville High School. Next weekend at the New Balance Indoor Nationals, Johnson is attempting to match his brother and add another national title ring for the Johnson household. "It's been great to try and mirror his accomplishments," said David speaking of his brother Anthony. Something that he took away from his big bro, "He always wanted to improve. He was one of those guys who didn't mind learning a lesson here and there with a bad meet." The current #2 ranked triple jumper in the United States this indoor season with a season best mark of 49'10.25", Johnson is excited about competing in his third high school national meet. "Looking to do some big things and represent Virginia." Johnson was a surprise finalist last year and finished 8th at the 2011 New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City after having the best mark from the first flight. MileStat.com interviewed the two-time Group AA state triple jump champion and Virginia state indoor state leader as he preps for the indoor nationals.
