Randy Curry enters the 2003 outdoor track season as the defending 6A 400m champion both indoors & out, as well as the fastest returning
200m runner in class 6A. Though he narrowly edged out two others in the 400m final and finished well behind Titus Ryan in the 200m in
2002, Curry may have trouble finding two 6A competitors to push him in the 400m and will be close to the front in any 200m race this
season.
Randy hesitates to be so bold when discussing the season himself, quickly pointing to fellow athletes who will be gunning for his 400m title and contesting his inheritance of the 200m crown. Shades Valley senior Taylor Narewski, for instance, nipped Curry's heals in Priceville and recently opened his outdoor season with a fast 200m on Curry's home track in Hewitt. Four other in-state athletes dipped below 23 seconds in the 200m at Leeds, all very fast times for early season openers. | |
But Randy Curry hasn't been exactly quiet himself. At the 6A indoor state meet, his winning time of 51.03 seconds stood a dominating
1.3 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. He also showed impressive short-sprint speed by finishing third in the 55m dash and was the
only 6A runner to score in both sprint events.
In his first outdoor meet, a four-way competition on the mondo track of Mountain Brook, Curry took first in the 300m dash. Though the distance may be odd, his time of 35.32 and his 2.5+ second winning margin are no jokes. At the Jefferson County meet in Hewitt, he set an impressive early-season time of 10.88 in the 100m and won the 400m in 50.46. If anyone takes the 6A 400m championship away from Randy Curry this season, he'll make sure they have to set a state record to do it. |
