Interview: Arthur Davis

Arthur Davis
Arthur Davis currently ranks first in the state all-time for the 400m dash, ninth in 200m. He has set one 5A state record, won four 5A event state championships, one 5A team title, earned All-State honors seven times and been mentioned in football recruiting magazines without ever donning pads. Not bad for a man just starting his third season of varsity competition.

As Williamson's sprint stud begins his senior track & field season, one could hardly imagine higher expectations. As a sophomore in 2001, Davis finished sixth in the 100m (11.42), fourth in the 200m (22.66), second in the 400m (47.62), and ran on the state-winning 4x400m relay team to lead his Lion team to the 5A state championship.
In 2002, Davis set fire to the track all year, consistently under 22 seconds in the 200 and 50 seconds in the 400. He anchored relays in unheard-of legs of 45 and 46 seconds, and earned MVP of the prestigious Meet of Champions in April. At the state meet, he was simply dominant, cruising his way to individual wins at state in the 200m (21.87), 400m (46.58 - state record), and again in the 4x400m (3:24.46) while a prelim false start kept him out of the open 100m.

Usually graduation saves an athlete from returning to high school competition after setting his own standards so high, but Arthur Davis accomplished all of this as only a junior and is thus blessed with the opportunity, yet cursed with the expectations, of a senior year. However, as Arthur will tell you, he has seen our expectations before, but we've never seen times like he intends to run this spring.
