Lenn sets three records; Scottsboro claims 3rd and 4th trophies of the year
In Class 5A, Saint Paul's sophomore Tara Lenn set three state records as the accolades continue to accumulate for her young career. Lenn started Friday morning with a new 3200m record, distancing herself from the field and crossing in 11:05. Later that night she finished second in the 800m run behind Johnson High School's Genoah Collins.
Lenn added two more records to her resume on Saturday, first crossing the 1600m finish line in 5:12.15 to make her the fastest 5A 1,600 meter runner ever. In her last race of the competition, Lenn joined her teammates to set the new 5A mark in the 4x800m relay at 10:14.64.
Kim Williams of Pleasant Grove had an outstanding individual effort of her own. Williams placed first in the long jump and 55m hurdles, as well as second in the 55m and 400m dashes and running for the second place 4x200m team, contributing to 44 of her team's 49-point, third place total.
Meanwhile, in team competition, the men and women's teams of Scottsboro swept both competitions to add two more blue trophies to the two earned in cross country in November. Coach John Esslinger and his teams now have twenty-seven state championships to their credit in just the past twelve years, including nine of the last ten attempted.
Seniors Jill Bryant and Tammy Freeman led the Lady Wildcats' charge for a third straight indoor championship. Bryant finished one place behind Tara Lenn in each of her four events, compiled three second place and one third place medals. Freeman finished second in the vault, fourth in the 400m dash, fifth in 55m hurdles, and passed three competitors in her two relay anchor efforts as Scottsboro finished third in the 4x200m and second in the 4x400m relays.
The Scottsboro men's team collected every piece of hardware available at the conclusion of the meet's competition. As a team, the Wildcats out-distanced runner-up Saint Paul's by fifty points, 111 to 61, to tally their third straight indoor championship. In individual action, senior Daniel Nolan earned MVP honors for his weekend's work: first in the 55m hurdles, first in the long jump, second in the 55m dash, third in the 400m dash, and a leg on the runner-up 4x200m relay. Performance of the Meet went to Nolan's senior teammate Jeremy Protz for his state record-setting mark in the vault. Protz cleared 14' 7" to repeat as the 5A vault champion and to become the new 5A all-time leader, while his younger sister Jessie was the female winner at nine feet.
