Former Hoover, Ole Miss runner to compete at World Duathlon

Former Hoover and Ole Miss track and cross country runner Hank Campbell has earned the chance to represent the United States at the World Duathlon Championships.

The event, to be held October 20 in Alpharetta, Georgia, will consist of a 10 kilometer run, a 40 kilometer bike, and end with a 5 kilometer run.

A 1998 graduate of Hoover High School, Campbell helped lead Hoover to state championships incross country (1997), indoor track (1998), and outdoor track (1995). Individually, he earned All-State honors in all three seasons of running and was the freshman 1600m champion in 1995.

Continuing his successful career at the University of Mississippi, Campbell was the top Rebel cross country runner during the 2001 season and the top Rebel finisher at the 2001 and 1999 SEC Cross Country Championships. He ran a personal best 1:55.81 in the 800 meters at the 2002 Alabama Relays and set a personal best in the outdoor 1500 meters (3:51.41) at the SEC Championships in 2001 and the indoor mile (4:15.63) at the Florida relays. His best and only 5000m was a 15:23 at the 2002 Southern Miss Invitational *. Campbell graduated from the University of Mississippi in May with a degree in Exercise Science.

Campbell has competed in triathlons and duathlons since 1999, with other highlights including the Alabama Triathlon Champion title from his third-place finish at the 2002 Mountain Lakes Triathlon in Guntersville, and an overall victory in the Abitaman in Mandeville, Louisiana. He also qualified for pro status at the Buster Britton Triathlon in Birmingham on June 15.

To qualify for the World Duathlon Championships, Campbell, 23, placed second in the Elite Male division at the USA National Duathlon Championship on July 14 in Carlsbad, California. At the end of the first 10K, Campbell was third in 34:17. After finishing the bike section in 1:06:37, he had caught up to second place, a position he would hold through the final 5K (19:01). Campbell's final time of 2:01:22 was just eleven minutes off the lead time.

Campbell, who now lives in Mobile, will compete in the Under 23 Elite Division at the World Championships. His race will begin at 9:32am on Sunday, October 20, at the Ryder Transportation Regional Complex, off Windward Parkway.
