Day one results from Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE - The 2005 indoor track & field season began Friday with the first day of competition at the LSU High School Invitational in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. High school teams from every state along the gulf coast competed in the 800m, 3200m, 4x200m relay, triple jump, and shot put.

Alabama continued its dominance in the distance events at this meet. The St. Paul's duo of Tara Lenn (11:36) and Mary Johnston (11:37) took first and second in the 3200m, and Caroline Wool of Montgomery Academy finished 3rd in 11:53 as Alabama runners swept the top six spots in the race. Scottsboro freshman Griff Graves made it an Alabama sweep by taking the men's race in 9:59. Graves' win marks the 6th consecutive year that a runner from Alabama has won the distance race at LSU (Scott Fuqua 2000, 2001, 2002 & John Brigham 2003, 2004).

McGill-Toolen's Andre Black won the triple jump with a mark of 46-11, just 1¼-inch short of the distance that made him the 6A outdoor champion in the event last May. Foley's Michael Nichols placed third with a jump of 45' 6". Unfortunately for Black and Nichols, the triple jump is not an event in the Alabama indoor season so they will have to wait until March to take another shot at a PR.

Competition continues Saturday with finals in the sprint events along with more action in the field and on the oval. Results will be posted on LSUsports.net as they come in with more coverage on AlabamaRunners.com to follow.
