With the AHSAA State Championships still a month away, several athletes are closing in on state records. Montgomery Academy 1600m runners Caroline Wool and Wallace Campbell both ran under the current 3A record in the event, while 1600m champion John Brigham (4:15.87) showed that he's ready to contest Scott Fuqua's 5A 1600m record of 4:14.99, as well as Fuqua's 3200m record of 9:29.17. Brigham has already run 9:12 (converted) this season.
Cullman's EC Gibbs won the men's 800m race, defeating recently-crowned Challenge of Champions winner Hill Sewell of Mountain Brook and Alabama's fastest active 800m runner Chris Patrick of Smiths Station. Gibb's time of 1:52.65 is almost half a second under the current 5A 800m record. If Brigham and Gibbs both run well in Tuscaloosa, they've already shown that all three 5A distance records could fall this year.
