Runner of the Week: Ethan Edgeworth

The Scottsboro Invitational brought the heat this weekend with several standout performances. Although, it was Ethan Edgeworth from Cold Springs High School that stole the show. The 2A standout ran up in the Large School Division and won in a personal best time of 15:14.06. His previous personal best was last year from the 2021 Southern Showcase where he ran 15:24.38 finishing 16 th . From the start, it was a three-man race between Edgeworth, Hewitt Trussville's Tristan Teer, and Scottsboro's Evan Hill. They came through the mile in 4:51 then the two mile at 9:47. From there, Edgeworth turned it on and pushed toward the finish.

Can you walk me through the race a little?

I was wanting to run around 15:30 to start the season but I had no clue what shape I was in. We went out at a 4:51 mile which was a little slower than I would go out last season. Our two mile was 9:47 and I was feeling tremendous. There is a hill right after you pass the two mile and I just picked it up at the hill and closed hard the last mile. God has blessed me to stay healthy through the summer. I thank my coaches, family, and teammates for pushing me at practice!

What does it feel like to get up there with the "Large Schools" and show them you belong there?

Oh there's no [better] feeling of being a 2A boy from Cold Springs where half the runners in my race don't know what "Cold Springs" is. To win it this year and see improvement from last year is great.

To piggyback off that question, what are some difficulties that come with being a small school?

Coming from a 2A School, that is the question we get asked the most. But we do not view ourselves differently than big schools. When we get older, the world will view us the same. So our main focus is being the best version [of] ourselves. To not makes excuses. To work hard and keep God first.

What is your racing schedule for the season?

Pepsi XC Challenge, The Southern Showcase, Kudzu Hills Invitational, Jesse Owens Classic, Cullman County Championships, Sectionals, and State!

Back in February after the AHSAA State Indoor Championships, you said you wanted to run 9:10 in the 3200m. At the RunningLane Track Championships in May, you ran exactly 9:10 in the 3200m. I know time is relative in cross country, but how fast do you think you can run this season?

I don't know what happened the last lap at RTC. [With] 400m to go, I was at 7:57. [For cross country], 14:40s for sure.

How was your summer leading into the season?

My summer was filled with fun, running with friends from different schools and towns. I started the recruiting process this summer and it's been interesting since! Do you care to share some schools you are looking at? Auburn, Alabama, NC State, Kentucky, and the US Naval Academy.

Do you credit anything, maybe a person or a quote, as your main source of inspiration?

Our team motto this season is 'being all in'. Basically just keeping your priorities straight: God, family, school, and running during the season.

What is your go-to pre-race meal?

The night before is spaghetti with a lot of noodles that my dad makes. On race day, it's peanut butter and jelly toast for breakfast then a rice crispy treat to tide me over.

What is your favorite cross country workout?

6 x 1000m repeats.

Who is your favorite pro runner?

Craig Engels!

What is your favorite shoe to train in?

It varies but right now my workout shoe is the Nike VaporFly 2 and my trainer is the New Balance 1080. Really like them both!

What sport would you do if you were not running?

Basketball!

Hypothetically, you're going to dinner with three people in history (dead or alive/past or present). Who are you eating dinner with?

Steve Prefontaine, Alan Webb, and Jesse Owens.

Keep an eye out as Ethan continues to tear it up this season and stay tuned for next week's Runner of the Week.
