Our track facilities at Chelsea High School are complete and the surrounding construction has finally ended, so we look forward utilizing our Jumbo-Tron , to showcase athletes, videos, and times.
An idea I had for one of my meets would be a county vs county meet. Not school districts, but COUNTIES. The counties I had originally considered were just Shelby and Jefferson County. However, I believe that opening it up to The Greater Birmingham area which would include Bibb, Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, St. Clair , Shelby and Walker Counties would be more inclusive, balance out competition and be more fun. This idea comes from the annual County meets we all host and an SEC vs. Big 10 meet I once attended. The entire meet would run like a normal competition , top two teams for both genders would still receive a trophy, but the points for each county would be added up and a county winner for each gender would also be named. This would give our athletes a chance to compete but also give them a chance to do something you dont see too often at high school track meets which is to cheer on opposing teams and as they work toward a common goal. The track community is already largely positive and tight, so my hope in doing this is that the friend groups, both coaches and their athletes, strengthens and expands.
I don't want to alienate any one school that is not within these county limits, so any school outside the county limits, James Clemens High School out of Huntsville for example, are still more than welcome to join! Their teams would still score for the overall team scores but not towards the county scores if only 1 or 2 teams from those counties attend.
"Per NFHS rules, we will be offering potentially 2 co-ed heats in the distance events. Any girls with a seed time under 2:20 for the 800 and 5:20 for the 1600 will have the option to run in a co-ed heat with boys. Notify Coach Lee when you submit your entries that you want to be in the co-ed heat instead of the fastest girls only heat."
