Each October, the region's attention in high school cross country turns to Oakville, Alabama - the home of the Jesse Owens Memorial Park and Museum. Named in honor of Jesse Owens, the legendary sprinter and long jumper who stunned the world at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, the course has grown into one of the South's premier championship sites. Since 2002, Oakville has hosted the AHSAA Cross Country Championships every fall, as well as the 2008 and 2015 AAU Nationals and collegiate championships for the Southern States and Gulf States Athletic Conferences. This Saturday, October 4th, the spotlight shines again as the 2025 Jesse Owens Classic welcomes a massive field.
This year's meet will see 4,447 athletes toe the line, representing 196 teams across 6 states. That makes Jesse Owens one of the largest in-season cross country meets in the South. While the nationally known RunningLane Championships in Huntsville take place later as a postseason event, Oakville stands as the premier regular-season test for teams chasing Alabama titles and beyond. For many programs, it is the benchmark before November's AHSAA State Championship, which returns to this same course on Saturday, November 8th.
