Six Crowned State Champions at 1A, 2A, 3A State Track
Westminster at Oak Mountain, Montgomery Academy and T.R. Miller won girls’ state track championships and Falkville, Mobile Christian and Piedmont won boys’ titles Saturday as 89th AHSAA state track and field championships concluded at Selma’s Memorial Stadium.
Coach Dale Carrell’s Lady Knights won the 1A girls’s championship with 120.50 points and Addison finished second with 72. Loachapoka and Whitesburg Christian tied for third with 55 each.
In class 2A, Montgomery Academy, coach by Michael Floyd, totaled 148 points to take the girls’ title, and LaFayette captured runner-up with 90 points. Altamont was third with 59 points.
T.R. Miller, coached by Eddie Brundidge, won easily in Class 3A with 153 points and Cottage Hill Christian took second with 86. Bayside Academy was third with 72.
Piedmont won its second straight boys’ Class 3A state championship under the direction of Coach Mark Mitchell, edging runner-up Greensboro 75 points to 62. Trinity was third with 53.
Mobile Christian, coached by Clinton Mitchell, piled up 138.50 points to win the 2A boys’ state title. Montgomery Academy was a close second with 129 and Lanett had 67 points to finish third.
Falkville won its second straight Class 1A state title. Coach Keith Wilemon’s Blue Devils piled up 157 points . St. Jude was second with 78 and Westminstr of Oak Mountain had 74.50.
Good Hope won the wheelchair division state title as junior Elena Guavera won the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash to finish with 40 points with the two first-place finishes Saturday. Both are state records in the girls’ wheelchair division.
Westminster-Oak Mountain’s Katie Brooks Boone also totaled 40 points to lead Class 1A girls. Karisa Nelson of T.R. Miller had 30 points in winning three events. Top point-getters in the boys’ competition were Denard Spears of Piedmont and Wesley Curles of Trinity Presbyterian.

Class 3A Girls
Karisa Nelson, T.R. Miller: Nelson, who set a new state 3A record in the 1,600-meter run Friday, followed with a Class 3A state-record performance in the 3,200 meters winning the event for the fourth time in her prep career with a winning time of 11:01.21. That time beat her own record set last year of 11:14.13. She closed out her prep career with her 10th outdoor state title winning the 800-meter run with a state-record 2:18.27 time. The previous record (2:18.31) was set by Lisa Weinard of St. Paul’s in 1998.
Karri Green, Piedmont: Won the 100-meter hurdles event with a winning time of 15.35. She also won the 300-meter hurdles clocking 47.22 seconds. She also won the 300-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash with times of 47.22 seconds an 26.43 seconds, respectively.
Valencia Robinson, B.B. Comer: Raced to the 100-meter dash championship in the finals clocking 12.76 seconds.
Callie Jones, Cottage Hill Christian: Set a record in the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet, 3 3/4 inches.
Caitlyn Dressler, Cottage Hill Christian: Set a Class 3A pole vault record clearing the bar at 11 feet. The old record, 9 feet, 9 inches, was set by Sophi Bru of UMS-Wright in 2009.
T.R. Miller High School: Won the 4x100-meter relay with a winning time of 52.022 – edging out Colbert County at the finish line. The Lady Indians’ time was 52.025.
Bayside Academy: Won the 4x400 relay clocking 4:15.43.
Class 2A Girls
Taylor Gerard, Montgomery Academy: Won the 3,200 meters with a time of 12:19.71. She won the 1,600 meters on Friday.
Taylor Young, Altamont: Won the 100-meter hurdles for the Knights with a time of 16.32 seconds. She followed with a 48.64-second time to win the 300-meter hurdles. Young picked up her fourth championship of the Class 2A meet winning the long jump with a 17-foot leap.
Angelica Robinson, Sheffield: Took the 100-meter dash championship with a 13.09 time in the finals.
Precious Hines, Tanner: Captured the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.75 seconds.
Chelsea Williams, Francis Marion: Won the discus throw with a distance of 93 feet, 4 inches.
Rachel Faucett, Pleasant Valley: Won the high jump with a height of 4-10.
Class 1A Girls
Maddie Hoaglund, Westminster-Oak Mountain: Swept the distance events in 1A with a win in the 3,200 meters. Her winning time was 11:53.22.
Kerimee Vinson, Loachapoka: Captured the 100-meter hurdles event with a winning time of 15.80 seconds.
Katie Brooks Boone, Westminster-Oak Mountain: Won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.17 seconds, captured the 200-meter dash clocking 25.70 seconds and won the 300-meter hurdles on Saturday with a time of 46.09 seconds. She won the 400-meter dash on Friday.
Jordan Richmond, Holy Spirit: Took the 800-meter title with a time of 2:23.91.
Kayla Pruitt, Addison: Threw the javelin 120 feet, 11 inches to win that event.
Kelly Anderson, J.U. Blacksher: Followed up her discus win on Friday with a shot put championship. Her winning toss was 36 feet, 1 inch.
Whitesburg Christian: Ran the 4x400 relay in 4:15.25 to win that event.
Loachapoka High School: Beat the competition in the 4x100-meter relay clocking 51.33 seconds.
Class 3A Boys
Wesley Curles, Trinity Presbyterian: Set a Class 3A 1,600-meter run on Friday and followed up with a near-record time of 9:48.71 to win the 3,200 meters. He closed out an outstanding meet winning the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.85 on Saturday.
Joshua Fuqua, Mobile Christian: Won the shot put with a 48-03 toss.
Trey Cunningham, Winfield: Won the 110-meter high hurdles clocking 15.35 seconds in the finals.
Denard Spears, Piedmont: Took the100-meter dash in 11.11 seconds and the 200-meter dash finals with a 22.78-second time. He edged out teammate C.J. Savage, who clocked 22.99, as the Bulldogs finished 1-2. Savage was also third in the 100-meter race.
Darrylvontae Campbell, Greensboro: Cleared 6 feet to win the high jump competition in Class 3A. He was one of six high jumpers to clear 6-0 but won with fewer misses.
T.R. Miller High School: The Tigers won the event with a winning time of 43.99 seconds.
Class 2A Boys
Jack Bargainier, Montgomery Academy: Gave the Eagles a sweep in the distance races with a 10:21.87 time in the 3,200 meters Saturday. He won the 1,600 race on Friday.
Jesse Austin, Montgomery Academy: Set a 2A state record in the pole vault clearing 14-06 to win.
Justin Freeman, Montgomery Academy: Won the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.08 seconds.
De’Rodgus Campbell, Isabella: Ran the 100-meter dash in 11.17 seconds to win the 2A event.
Cameron Trammell, Lanett: Took the 200-meter dash finals with a time of 22.84 seconds.
Jack Anderson, Montgomery Academy: Won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.18.
Carson Presley, Mobile Christian: won the triple jump competition with a winning leap of 43-02.25.
LaFayette: Won the 4x400 relay with a 3:33.66 time – beating Mobile Christian by less than a seconds.
Montgomery Academy: The Eagles clocked 44.21 seconds to win the 4x100-meter relay.
Class 1A Boys
Paul Richardson, Whitesburg Christian: Won the 1,600 run on Friday and followed with the 3,200-meter run victory on Saturday. His winning time in the3,200 was 10:14.28.
Tyler Crumpton, Phillips: Ran the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.17 seconds to win the finals.
Ismail Saleem, St. Jude: Clocked 11.13 seconds to win the Class 1A 100-meter dash finals and then ran 22.49 seconds to capture the 200-meter dash championship as well.
Jacob Carrell, Westminst-Oak Mountain: Ran the 800 meters in 2:02.69 to win that event.
Canaan Smith, Falkville: Threw the javelin 164 feet, 8 inches to win the competition.
Eddie Thomas, Alabama School/Deaf: Won the shot put championship with a throw of 44-08.25.
Marion County High School: won the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 44.29 seconds.
