McNeese wins both men and women's divisions at the Azaela Classic cross country meet in Mobile

MOBILE, AL – McNeese State won both the men’s and the women’s division of the Azaela Classic cross country meet on Saturday.


The Cowboys scored 45 points in beating out Troy (54) and host South Alabama (82) while the Cowgirls scored 45 points to win the women’s meet over Southeastern Louisiana (69) and South Alabama (80).


The meet opened the season for both teams.


McNeese’s Tinette Burger claimed the women’s 5K run with a clocking of 18:67. Stephen Scullion led the Cowboys with a fourth place finish in their 5K run with a 15:22 effort.


“This was a good start to our season,” McNeese coach Brendon Gilroy said.


Both teams had been slated to run in the Louisiana Tech meet on Saturday but that event was cancelled and the squads went to Mobile.


Other top 10 finishes for the Cowgirls were a seventh place for Amy Guinn at 20:16 and an eighth for Candice McCormaick at 20:30.


For the Cowboys, Jordan Neil finished sixth at 15:56 and Michael Dyer was 10th at 16:00.


The Cowboys had six finish in the top 20 and the Cowgirls had five.


The next meet for McNeese will come in two weeks at Corpus Christi in an event hosted by TAM-Corpus Christi.
