NOBLES THROWS FOR SCHOOL RECORD ON DAY TWO OF VULCAN INVITE

Steven Nobles posted a school record and a second-place finish in the men's weight throw Saturday at the Vulcan Invitational.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of South Alabama senior thrower Steven Nobles posted a school-record 18.09m (59-04.25) mark in a runner-up finish in the men’s weight throw on Saturday to cap off the Jaguars’ showing at the Vulcan Invitational this weekend.

Nobles’s performance marks his fourth top-five finish in four competitions this season. His new record surpasses teammate Joey Torres’s Birmingham Invitational mark of 17.99m (59-00.25). Torres finished immediately behind Nobles on Saturday on a 17.67m (57-11.75) effort.

Lady Jag sophomore throws specialist Bobbie Williamson also shattered a South Alabama women’s indoor record, notching the school’s new shot put record on a fifth-place 14.10m (46-03.25) heave. Williamson also took seventh in the weight throw (16.40m/53-09.75) to improve her second-place all-time USA standing in the event.

Latifah Johnson finished 10th in the weight throw (15.88m/52-01.25) and 12th in the shot put (12.19m/40-00).

Tori Lawson, part of the Lady Jag distance medley squad that recorded the school’s best-ever time on Friday, completed the women’s 3,000 meters on Saturday in 10:00.49, moving her from fifth to third all-time.

Anton Graphenreed earned his third collegiate 200-meter dash victory of the season, clocking a 21.43-second finish, only five one-hundredths of a second off his career-best time. He also matched his own indoor 60-meter dash record on a 6.85 finish, which was good enough for sixth place.

Briana Aiken recorded a 12.32m (40-05) triple jump leap to surpass Louise Faye's 12-meter number-one standing from 2009. Aiken also cleared 3.55m (11-07.75) in the women’s pole vault to come in eighth place and improve on her fourth-place USA all-time standing in the event.

Tyler Agee, Spencer Anderson, Tevin Barnett and Mikel Magnusson combined to post a 3:20.50 in the men’s 4x400-meter relay to finish third.

USA head coach Paul Brueske commended his athletes on this weekend’s performance and mentioned the importance of a strong showing before tackling the Sun Belt Conference indoor championships on Feb. 25-26 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

“This was a good meet for us,” Brueske said. “We broke four school records and set 24 personal records this weekend. It definitely gives us some confidence and momentum going into the conference meet.”
