This Week's Nominees:
Caroline Couey, Opelika High School (Alabama): First place among 148 finishers at the Thompson XC Classic + Shelby Co. meet came via an 18:28.90 clocking over the 5K, with a 15.2-second margin to spare. That time now ranks No. 6 of 2,020 athletes in MileSplit's database at University of Montevallo XC Course since 2011, and No. 4 among senior athletes on that same list.
Lucy Hughston, Deshler High School (Alabama): First place among 126 finishers came in 19:43.41 over 5K at the Kudzu Hills Invitational, with a 19.7-second cushion at the line. The clocking marks 116.6 seconds faster than a prior mark on this course, and ranks No. 45 of 3,258 athletes in MileSplit's database at Cold Springs High School since 2005, No. 11 among freshmen on that list.
Till Baggett, Mountain Brook Jr. HS (Alabama): A 21:30.13 effort over 5K was good enough to win the Spain Park Cross Country Invitational outright, with a 34.1-second cushion over the rest of the 50-runner field. That performance places No. 491 of 4,571 athletes in MileSplit's database at Veterans Park since 2008, and No. 118 among freshmen in that same span.
Genevieve Riley, Northridge High School (Alabama): Covering 5K in 21:30.10 was enough to win the Paul W. Bryant XC Invitational by 34.5 seconds over a 31-runner field. The performance ranks No. 220 of 2,300 athletes in MileSplit's database at Munny Sokol Park since 2007, and No. 65 among seniors on that same list.
Reese Swidecki, Cold Springs (Alabama): A 5K clocking of 18:52.83 at the Kudzu Hills Invitational earned a runner-up finish among 99 finishers, shaving 15.3 seconds off the previous mark set on this course. That time ranks No. 10 of 3,258 athletes in MileSplit's database at Cold Springs High School since 2005, and it stands as the fastest freshman clocking there among 910 freshman athletes in that span.
