Season Review: Lady Hornets Win SWAC Indoor Track Championship

The Alabama State University women's track and field program started their run toward the 2011 Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship on December 12 at the Orange and Purple Winter Classic hosted by Clemson University.

Several performers finished with top-10 finishes, but it was Lutrisha Altidor who stood out as she won the 800 meter run. The 4x400 meter relay team finished fourth and Shexnievia Bryant and Shanice Mells finished three-four in the women's shot put.

After the holiday break, ASU traveled back to Clemson to participate in the Clemson Indoor Invitational. Altidor again showed her early-season strength with a win in the 500 meter dash and a second-place finish in the 800 meter run. Mells also had a strong showing in the weight throw with a third-place finish.

The midway point of the indoor season saw the Lady Hornets travel to Southern Illinois University to participate in the Saluki Open.

Altidor continued her dominance in the 800 meter run with another win, while teammate Breana Kelly was just a couple of seconds behind her to finish second. Tyrisha Chambers finished third in the high jump and several other team members had strong top-10 performances.

As January was coming to an end, ASU traveled up I-65 to Nashville to the Tennessee State Invitational. It was at this time the Lady Hornets began to pick up steam with only a month left until the SWAC Championship. ASU performers had 31 top-10 finishes in the invite led by Fola Richardson's win in the 55 meter hurdles.

Kesia Derilus had been fighting an injury since the cross country season and had her best showing of the season so far with a third place finish in the 5,000 meter run.

ASU's next invitational was at East Tennessee State's Niswonger Invitational. ASU did not send a full team squad to Johnson City, Tenn., but had several strong performances. Courtney Gooch won the 800 meter run in the unseeded/college division and Latrice Lee finished fourth in the 60 meter dash. Erynne Byrd finished fourth in the 60 meter hurdles and the 4x400 meter relay team finished fourth.

ASU had one final meet to get ready for the SWAC Championship, and that was the Tiger Tune Up, again hosted by Clemson University. The Lady Hornets continued to build their momentum with 17 top-10 performances. The meet started with Tokeyah Jones and Latrice Lee going three-six in the 60 meter dash and that was followed by Altidor and Quyanna Browne going three-five in the 400 meter dash.

Altidor finished her strong 400 meter dash with a fifth-place finish in the 800 meter run while Kesia Derilus (8th) and Courtney Gooch (9th) had strong finishes in the 1 Mile Run and the 3,000 meter run.
Tyrisha Chambers was second the in high jump and Melissa Romelus was third in the shot put.

With all the momentum ASU had picked up during the final month of the season the SWAC Championship turned out to be a run away with ASU grabbing 151 total points in the meet. The closest competitor was Prairie View's second place total of 103 points.

Derilus led the Hornets scoring 29 individual points with a championship and 10 points in the 3,000 meters, plus 8 points in the mile run, 6 points in the 5,000 meters, and 5 points in the 800 meters.  Alabama State's Richie Beene took home Coach of the Year honors.

The men also had several top performances over the course of the season as the men ended the year with a third-place finish at the SWAC Championships.

Charles Flewellen was coming off an All-SWAC cross country season, and continued that performance into the indoor track season. He started the year with a third place finish in the 800 meter run at the Orange and Purple Winter Classic in Clemson. Shawn Lockhart also looked good with a fourth-place finish in the 60 meter dash.

Byrd was again impressive in the second meet with a seventh-place finish in the 60 meter dash at the Clemson Indoor Invitational. Jeffery Adams finished fourth in the 60 meter hurdles and Byrd finished second in the 200 meter dash.

But the standout of the meet for the Hornets was Jonathan Franklin's first-place finish in the 400 meter dash. Teammate Vincent Butler finished second. The 4x400 meter relay team ended the invite with its' first-place finish.

At the Saluki Open the Hornets had several strong performances led by Franklin's win in the 400 meter dash, his second consecutive first-place run. Delorean Peek also had a first-place finish in the 800 meter run while the 4x400 meter relay team also had another first-place finish.

The men headed to Nashville and the Tennessee State Invitational with a lot of momentum and Peek pointed out that fact with another 800 meter win. Charles Flewellen was second and Christopher Duncan was third in the same event.

Duncan had a second-place finish in the 1 mile run and Flewellen finished one spot behind in third. The 4x400 meter relay team finished second.
