Track Athletes Set Sights on NCAA Regionals

MONTGOMERY—The Alabama State University track program has five student-athletes traveling to Jacksonville, Fla. over the weekend to participate in the University of North Florida Last Chance Invitational at Hodges Stadium, this Friday and Saturday, May 13-14.

The event gets underway at 11 a.m. (CT) on Friday with the field events, while the running events are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

The Invitational will have student-athletes from 66 men's and women's teams competing, including Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami and South Florida.

The event is not a team competition, but is a “last chance” meet for student-athletes to improve on individual performances in order to qualify for the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Regionals.

Tia Rolle from Nassau, Bahamas, and Tyrisha Chambers of Kansas City, Mo., from the women's team are looking to improve their performances.

Rolle will be trying to improve her times in the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash, while Chambers will run the 100 meter hurdles and look to add to her SWAC Championship heptathlon numbers.

Delorean Peek of Detroit, Mich., Jeffery Adams from Jonesboro, Ga., and Ronald Jordan of Dallas, Texas, from the men's team are also looking to improve their performances.

Peek will be looking to improve his times in the 400 meter dash and the 800 meter run. Adams will be looking to add points to his decathlon numbers and Jordan will look to improve his time in the 110 meter hurdles, where he is presently 84th in the nation.

There will be time trials on all the sprints leading up to the championships which will take place Saturday afternoon. The NCAA will host two regional championships and any ASU student-athlete that makes it to the regionals will travel to Bloomington, Ind. May 26-28 for the NCAA East Regional.

The 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa.
