New Orleans, LA -- Alabama A&M's Nathan Stephens came from behind to win the 2011 Southwestern Athletic Conference Track and Field men's decathlon.

Stephens won the decathlon 1500 meter run in 4:33.88 for 719 points, pushing him to first-place in the standings. He recorded 6337 total points.

Stephens completed an improbable comeback Friday at the SWAC Track & Field championships making up 719 points in the final event of the decathlon to become the Bulldogs' first SWAC back-to-back champion in the event since Patrick Lockhart won back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2004.

Stephens won the 1,500 meters by nearly 20 seconds over Jackson State's Justin Adams with a time of 4:33 to overtake the lead in the final event.

The 1,500 meter victory was the fifth event that Stephens won in the 10-event competition. Earlier in day two, he won the discus with a throw of 37.87 meters. Stephens also was tops in the javelin throw with a distance of 43.16 meters, the shot put with a distance of 11.41 meters and  the pole vault competition with a height of 3.02 meters.

Another Bulldog, Marion Malone, finished 3rd in the decathlon with 5,298 points.
