Track Teams have solid final tuneup in Coach O Invitational

The Alabama State women's and men's track teams had solid performances at the Troy University Coach O Invitational Saturday in the final tuneup before next weekend's SWAC Outdoor Championships.

The Lady Hornets had three first-place finishes, one second, and four third-place finishes, while the men's team posted one first place, two second place finishes and a trio of third-place finishes in the 10-team meet.

“We got what we needed from this meet,” Hornets head coach Ritchie Beene said. “We got some things accomplished in some areas I needed to see improvement in, but there were still some areas where I didn't quite get the output I was expecting. But we went down to Troy and overall ran a strong meet, despite the fact we didn't compete every athlete in every event that we normally would.”

On the women's side, Breana Kelly won the 800 meter run in a time of 2:13.90. Kesia Derilus won the 3000 meter steeplechase in a time of 11:36.00 in a race that saw ASU finish 1-3-4. Raheema Hodges came in third at 11:59.00, followed by Soyong Smith with a time of 12:56.00. In the shotput, Shanice Mells won with a heave of 13.41 meters.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Jamie Brooks, Tyrisha Chambers, Tokeyah Jones and Latrice Lee finished second with a time of 45.85.6 seconds. The Lady Hornets finished 3-4-5 in the 100 hurdles (Chambers 14.49.6; Fola Richardson 14.63.5; Paris Thompson 14.80.4), and third in both the long jump (Asia Tavernier 5.49 meters) and javelin (Melissa Romelus 38.07 meters).

In men's competition ASU finished 1-2-3 in the 800 meter run, where Delorean Peak (1.53.60), Charles Flewellen (1:54.30) and Christopher Duncan (1:55.40) took top honors.

Ronald Jordan finished second in the 400 meter hurdles (54.22 seconds). Vincent Butler finished third in the 400 meter run with a time of 49.00 seconds. Jeffrey Adams took third in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.38 seconds.
