Track and Field Set for Regular Season Finale at Troy

MONTGOMERY—Alabama State University's track and field teams will end the regular season this weekend at the Coach “O” Classic hosted by Troy University. The meet will take place in Troy, Ala. on Saturday, April 23rd, and will begin at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer throw.

The meet will serve as ASU's final tune up before the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships which begin on Friday, April 28th in New Orleans.

Head coach Ritchie Beene continues to look for improvement as the regular season winds down.

“We are using this meet as our final tune up for the SWAC Championships,” Beene said. “We will use the meet for several individuals to compete in different events as they look to improve in events they have not competed in a lot this season.”

There will be 10 institutions represented in the classic led by Auburn University, South Alabama and Troy. ASU will also face conference-rival Alabama A&M in several events.

“We know we will once again face some top competition like we have this whole outdoor season,” Beene said. “We are also facing Troy University at their place and anytime we compete against Troy, we want to do well. This meet will also give us a chance to see where we stand against an in-conference foe, Alabama A&M.”

ASU has several competitors that have been injured for most of the season and they are now finally getting healthy.

“We are finally getting some of our folks healthy,” Beene said. “We are probably back to 75-80 percent, which is better than we have been in a while, but we still have several people that are not back to 100 percent. We are hoping to have them ready by the SWAC Championship.”
