Track and Field Performs Strong at War Eagle Invite

AUBURN—The Alabama State University men's and women's track and field team had several strong performances over the weekend at the War Eagle Invitational hosted by Auburn University.

The Hornets only had this week and next week to work on bettering their performances before the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship, and head coach Ritchie Beene liked what he saw from his teams this weekend.

"We got a lot better this weekend than last week,” Beene said. “We faced some good, quality competition and competed strong. If you look at the quality of competition we faced today, you see we faced some of the top competition in the country and I am leaving Auburn feeling a lot better about our teams that I did last week.”

The women have run well all season in the 800 meter run and today was no different as three Lady Hornets finished among the top 15 finishers.

Lutrisha Altidor
(2:13.29) finished 11th, Breana Kelly was 13th (2:14.64) and Kesia Derilus (2:14.79) was 14th.

Tia Rolle
had a top-10 finish when she finished ninth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.10. Derilus also finished ninth in the 1500 meter Invitational run with a time of 4:52.29, and she also finished ninth in the 5000 meter run (18:28.65).

Raheema Hodges
has been working hard on her steeplechase performance and she finished with a season-high sixth-place in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:11.62.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Latrice Lee, Tokeyah Jones, Jamie Brooks and Rolle finished third with a time of 45.65.

The women were not the only ones to perform well this weekend, as several men had solid performances.

The men started the men's competition with three top-10 finishes in the 800 meter run. Delorean Peek had a third-place finish with a time of 1:51.33, Charles Flewellen had an eighth-place finish (1:53.68) and Christopher Duncan was 10th (1:53.96).

The men also had three top finishers in the 100 meter dash led by Jeffery Adams' sixth place finish (14.46). Quantavious Lockhart was 10th (14.67) and Ronald Jordan was just a step behind in 11th (14.69).

Adams then turned around and had a sixth-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles (14.59) and Jordan finished ninth in the 400 meter hurdles (53.18).

The 4x100 meter relay team of Vincent Butler, Sylvester Byrd, Lockhart and Jordan finished ninth with a time of 41.71, and the 4x400 meter relay team finished 10th in 3:16.24. That team was made up of Peek, Jonathan Franklin, Duncan and Butler.

ASU's final meet before the SWAC Championships will be next week at the Coach “O” Classic next Saturday at Troy University.
