Track and Field at War Eagle Invitational

MONTGOMERY—The Alabama State University track teams will be back in action this weekend at the War Eagle Invitation, hosted by Auburn University. The Invitational is a three-day event beginning Friday afternoon with the hammer and javelin competition's followed by the 1500 and 5000 meter men's and women's run.

The Hornets will be one of 25 teams in the invitational which will include such powers as the University of Alabama, Georgia, Stanford, Florida State, South Carolina, Georgia and Auburn.

This will be the first full event the Hornets have participated in for several weeks. Last week, ASU had a partial team to qualify and compete at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.

ASU continues to work on getting better each week and head coach Ritchie Beene continues to look for that weekly improvement.

“This week we are looking for improvement in the individual events,” Beene said. “We are not performing badly, but we are not where we want to be as we continue to look towards the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.”

Along with the Texas Relays last week, this is week's competition will represent some of the top programs the Hornets will face.

“Even though the competition will be extremely tough, we are still looking to improve and compete,” Beene said. “When we post solid performances against this type of competition, it gives us a good indication of where we are going as a team.”

This week and next week's meet hosted by Troy University will be the Hornets final tests before the SWAC Championship coming up at the end of the month.
