Track and Field Athletes Compete in Jacksonville

MONTGOMERY—The Alabama State University track and field team will send a contingent of field athletes to Jacksonville this weekend to participate in the Gem of the Hills Invitational hosted by Jacksonville State University.

There will be 19 teams in the invitational with eight teams from the state of Alabama.  Along with ASU, those are Alabama A&M, Bevil State Community College, Birmingham Southern, Miles College, University of Montevallo, Stillman College and host Jacksonville State University.

The Hornets are looking to improve on their field events and the Gem of the Hills competition will give those student-athletes an extra event to compete in as the team continues to look for improvement leading up the Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship.

While the field event programs have had some solid performances this season, head coach Ritchie Beene is always looking for extra events to help the team improve.

“We are looking for our field event performers to improve on their throws and events and continue to get better leading up to the SWAC Championship,” Beene said. “We will not be able to take all of these student-athletes with us to the Texas Relays next week, so this will be a great opportunity in a friendly environment to get some extra competition in and work on improving.”
