The 5A division of the AHSAA State Championship closed Saturday, May 2 at Gulf Shores Municipal Track with a Scottsboro double - the Wildcats won both the boys and girls team titles by wide margins, and the girls trophy stop was complicated by a dead tie for second place between Guntersville and Arab.

Scottsboro built an 89-point margin to claim the Blue Map behind junior Banks Bradford, who swept the 800, 1600, and 3200 and broke her own meet record in the mile. Isabelle Nelson added points in the hurdles, Draeia Prater took the 400, Caroline Dawson won the javelin, and the Wildcats won both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Guntersville and Arab finished tied at 53, with both teams set to share the Red Map as co-runners-up. Guntersville got points from Madeleine Wharton's pole vault title and four scoring relays; Arab's contributions came from a deep field events group, including Kamryn Torbert's discus runner-up score and points across the high jump and pole vault.

Scottsboro's boys team title ran on the same engine as the girls. Sophomore Ryder Linville swept the 800, 1600, and 3200 and broke a meet record himself. Senior Taygan Harris broke the meet record in the shot put. Craft Sanders won the pole vault, and the Wildcats finished second in both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Guntersville claimed the Red Map in part on a meet-best 4x800 relay (8:03.56), with depth across the 400 and 800.

Three 5A meet records fell at Gulf Shores, all by Scottsboro athletes.
Banks Bradford (Scottsboro, 11) won the girls 1600 in 5:00.61, breaking her own 5A record of 5:01.43 set in 2025. She also won the 800 (2:18.50) and 3200 (10:56.52).
Ryder Linville (Scottsboro, 10) won the boys 1600 in 4:12.88, breaking the 5A record of 4:14.04 set by Jacksonville's Evan Hill in 2023. He also won the 3200 (9:31.83) and the 800 (1:56.43).
Taygan Harris (Scottsboro, 12) won the boys shot put at 57-09.00, breaking the 5A record of 55-09.50 set by Tristan Hawkins in 2016.
Individual Highlights
Sprints
Central-Clay County junior Zykeria Heflin captured one of the most impressive event hauls of the meet - winning the 100 (12.62), 200 (25.45), 100 hurdles (15.38), and long jump (17-08.50). The four-event sweep accounted for 40 of Central-Clay's 47 team points.
Tyjuan Turner (Eufaula, 12) doubled in the 100 (11.18) and 200 (22.50). Corbyn Patterson (Sylacauga, 12) won the 400 in 48.87.
Hurdles
In addition to Heflin's 100-hurdles win, Tamia Bruce (Wenonah, 11) doubled with the 300 hurdles title (44.88) and the high jump (5-02.00). Asa Sutter (West Point, 12) won the boys 110 hurdles in 15.35, and Jeremiah Crawford(Sylacauga, 11) won the 300 hurdles in 40.36.
Distance
Banks Bradford (Scottsboro, 11) and Ryder Linville (Scottsboro, 10) both swept the 800-1600-3200 distance triples. Bradford broke a meet record in the 1600; Linville broke a meet record in the 1600 as well.
Field Events
Zykeria Heflin (Central-Clay County, 11) won the long jump at 17-08.50. Amya Phillips (Center Point, 11) won the triple jump at 36-01.75. Ke'Asia Washington (Center Point, 12) won the shot put at 38-04.00. Kamryn Torbert(Beauregard, 12) won the discus at 123-09. Caroline Dawson (Scottsboro, 11) won the javelin at 122-06. Tamia Bruce(Wenonah, 11) won the high jump at 5-02.00, and Madeleine Wharton (Guntersville, 11) won the pole vault at 10-06.00.
On the boys side, Sam Smith (Elberta, 11) won the high jump at 6-06.00, and Craft Sanders (Scottsboro, 12) won the pole vault at 14-00.00. D'Marion Dedrick (Wenonah, 11) won the long jump at 21-06.75, and Tristin Wilson (Central-Clay County, 12) won the triple jump at 46-11.00. Taygan Harris (Scottsboro, 12) won the shot put at 57-09.00 (meet record). Chrisopher Lewis (Ramsay, 11) won the discus at 163-02. Bo Davis (Demopolis, 12) won the javelin at 178-03.
Relays
Girls: Charles Henderson won the 4x100 in 49.81, Scottsboro won the 4x400 in 3:59.08, and Scottsboro won the 4x800 in 10:03.83.
Boys: Eufaula won the 4x100 in 42.84, Ramsay won the 4x400 in 3:21.38, and Guntersville won the 4x800 in 8:03.56.
