Overtime Game Slips Away From Gamecocks at Presbyterian

FINAL STATS

CLINTON, S.C. – Despite 18 points from senior Jeremy Bynum and a double-double by senior Nick Murphy, the Jacksonville state men's basketball team fell 74-70 in overtime at Presbyterian on Wednesday night.

In a game that saw 14 ties and 19 lead changes, the Gamecocks (2-9) couldn't overcome an early run by the Blue Hose (4-6) in dropping their fifth game in a row. JSU trailed by seven in the final minute of the extra period, but a desperation run and a hustle steal by freshman Brice Jenkins gave the Gamecocks the ball with 13 seconds left and only trailing by three. Murphy had an open look from just right of the top of the key, but his attempt to tie missed long.

Murphy, the forward from Bronx, N.Y., did score 16 on 7-for-13 shooting and pull down a game-high 12 rebounds for JSU's first double-double and the team's first double-digit-rebounding performance of the year. He also moved into 14th on the school's career scoring list in the game, passing Aaron Kelly and Jay Knowlton with 1,237 career points.

Bynum was 7-for-10 from the floor and pulled down a season-high seven boards in the loss. The Oxford, Ala., native had 13 of his team-high points total in the second half alone.

On a night where JSU shot 56 percent from the floor, junior DeAndre' Bynum went 4-for-5 from the field to score a career-high 10 points, while junior Dominique Shellman scored 11 and dished eight assists without committing a turnover. Stephen Hall added 13 for the Gamecocks, marking the first time they have had five players in double figures since November of last year.

The Blue Hose used a 77 percent outing in their 30 free throw attempts to make the difference in the game and almost quit committing fouls at the 10-minute mark of the second half. They were whistled for seven in the half's first 10 minutes and were only charged with two over the game's final 15 minutes. JSU shot 67 percent from the line but only got 15 attempts.

PC's leading scorer, Al'Lonzo Coleman overcame a dreadful start to lead all scorers with 19 points. After missing his first seven attempts from the floor, he made four of his last six and went 11-for-14 from the charity stripe to account for the majority of his output.

Khalid Mutakabbir scored 17, while Pierre Miller and Jake Troyli added 12 and 10, respectively for Presbyterian.

The Gamecocks jumped out to an early eight-point lead by hitting their first four attempts from the floor but couldn't hold on. The Blue Hose used a 12-3 run that gave them their first lead of the night at 16-15 with 8:46 to play.

Neither team led by more than four points until a Murphy runner with 7:20 to play in the second half gave JSU a 48-43 lead. Presbyterian scored the next six to reclaim the lead at 49-48, but a Shellman trey with 4:49 left put the Gamecocks back on top, the 16th lead change of the night.

After a PC turnover, Jeremy Bynum knocked down a triple that stretched the lead to four, but the Blue Hose put together another spurt that tied the game at 53-53. The two exchanged buckets before a Murphy miss and a Bynum foul sent Coleman to the line with 48 seconds to play.

The big guy made one of his two, as did Mutakabbir with less than 20 seconds to play. The Gamecocks corralled the rebound and set up a play for Bynum, who used a screen at the top of the key to knock down a jumper with five seconds that tied the game and sent it to the extra period.

The Blue Hose took control early in overtime, building a66-59 lead with 1:58 to play, their largest and final advantage of the night.

The Gamecocks will be back at home on Sunday afternoon, when they start a two-game Ohio Valley Conference homestand against Southeast Missouri. The men's 4:30 p.m. tip will follow the women's 2 p.m. game against the Redhawks. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or by calling the JSU Athletic Ticket Office at 256-782-8499.
