Gamecocks Fall On the Road to Oregon, 74-56

EUGENE, Ore. – A hot-shooting night by Oregon did in the Jacksonville State men's basketball team on Monday night, when JSU fell victim in a 74-56 Ducks win in historic McArthur Court.

The Ducks (7-3) shot 57 percent from the floor, 60 percent in the first half, and got 20 points from Joevan Catron to down the Gamecocks (2-8) in their first game against Pac 10 opponent. Senior Nick Murphy was the lone JSU player in double figures with 14 in the loss.

Catron hit seven of his 11 attempts from the floor and connected on 6-of-7 free throws to account for his output. E.J. Singler was 6-for-7 from the floor to score 14 in the win.

Nine of the 11 JSU players that saw the floor scored, including career highs of seven points for Leventrice Gray and five for Frankie Bougher. Junior Stephen Hall had nine , while freshman Brian Williams added eight.

The Gamecocks struggled to the tune of a .370 shooting percentage in the second half that led to a .415 mark on the night. They were just 3-for-14 from behind the arc, but outrebounded the larger Oregon squad, 29-28. Gray, a junior from Birmingham, Ala., grabbed four offensive boards to lead JSU to 12 rebounds on the offensive glass.

Catron and Singler each grabbed seven boards for Oregon. Garrett Sim added 10 points for UO, while Jay-R Strowbridge scored nine.

The Ducks jumped on JSU early, scoring the game's first eight points and riding a 60-percent effort from the floor in the first half to take a 39-27 lead into the locker room. Oregon turned 10 first half turnovers by JSU into 16 points.

Singler was 4-for-5 from the floor, 2-for-3 from behind the arc, in the first 20 minutes to lead all scorers with 10 points at the intermission, while Hall and Murphy each had six to lead the Gamecocks.

Oregon took control for good out of the gates in the second half. The Ducks scored 17 of the first 22 points in the half to build a 56-32 advantage. Catron took over in the second half, scoring 12 from the start of the period until he was taken out with eight minutes to play.

The Gamecocks will now trek 2,754 miles to Clinton, S.C., where they will face Presbyterian College on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast live on the JSU Radio Network.
