JSU Women Travel To No. 16 Florida State On Sunday

Live Stats

JACKSONVILLE – Even though semester finals are out of the way, the Jacksonville State women's basketball will have a stout test on the court Sunday as it travels to Tallahassee, Fla. to take on No. 16 Florida State. Tip off is set for 1 p.m. CST.

The Gamecocks (2-5) have been idle since dropping their Ohio Valley Conference opener to Tennessee Tech last Saturday. JSU will be looking to end a five-game losing skid and its second road win of the season after topping Troy on the road. The Seminoles of FSU, ranked 16th in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 and 17th in the Associated Press Polls, enter the contest 7-1 with the lone loss to Michigan State. The Seminoles have wins over Alabama, Auburn and Vanderbilt in the non-conference season. FSU finished with a 28-6 overall mark last season and claimed the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season crown. The Garnett and Gold put together an NCAA Tournament run a season ago, reaching the Elite Eight round before falling to eventual national champion Connecticut.

Sunday's duel will be the first meeting between JSU and FSU on the hardwood. The last time the two institutions met in athletic competition came last season on the football field. FSU edged the Gamecocks, 19-9 in Tallahassee, Fla. Jax State will be playing its third ACC foe all time and the first since facing North Carolina State in 2008. JSU ventured into Cameron Indoor Stadium in 2004 to take on Duke.

Junior Brittany Wiley continues to pace the Gamecock offense, averaging 11.7 points per contest. Wiley has finished five of the seven games with double digit scoring totals along with pulling down four rebounds per game. Sophomore Danielle Vaughn is the other Gamecock averaging double figures in the scoring column. Vaughn has raised her average to 10 point per game after stringing together five-straight games in double figures. In the five-game stretch, the Huntsville, Ala.-post player has connected on 59 percent from the field and averaging 11.6 points. She currently leads the OVC in field goal percentage at 58 percent on the season. Senior Danielle Beneby turned in a career-best performance against Tennessee Tech as she posted a career-high 21 points after draining nine field goals.

As a team, JSU continues to be one of the top teams in the league in rebounds. The squad leads the OVC in offensive rebounds with a 16.9 mark and ranks second in the conference in rebounding margin with a +3.1 edge over the opposition. Jax State pulls down 41.0 rebounds per game and will be tested against FSU as it ranks sixth in the nation in rebounding margin at +14.5.

The FSU contest is the first of back-to-back road trips for the Gamecocks as they travel over to Atlanta, Ga. on Thursday to face Georgia State. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. CST on the GSU campus.
