Women's Hoops Opens Conference Play With Tennessee Tech

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's women's basketball team returns to Pete Matthews Coliseum on Saturday as it opens the Ohio Valley Conference portion of the schedule against Tennessee Tech. Tip off is set for 5:15 p.m.

The hoops contest will follow JSU's NCAA Second Round football contest with Wofford at 11 a.m. Fans will be admitted free to the basketball game with a football ticket stub. The JSU-TTU men's contest will follow at 7:45 p.m.

The Gamecocks (2-4) enter the conference opener having dropped the last four contests. JSU returned from the state of Florida last weekend with a pair of setbacks to Bethune-Cookman and Stetson. The Golden Eagles of TTU (4-1) begins conference play as one of the hottest teams in the OVC. Tech began the season with four straight wins before falling at home on Wednesday to Middle Tennessee State.

JSU and Tech will be meeting for the 15th time on the hardwood as the Purple and Golf have dominated the series 11-3 since Jax State joined the conference for the 2003-04 season. Tech has claimed the last four match ups with the Red and White dating back to a JSU win in Cookeville in 2008.

Jax State Assistant Coach Dee Bell will renew acquaintances with Tech as he was on the Golden Eagles' staff last season. Bell was a major factor in the Golden Eagles'14-win season last year after TTU claimed just nine wins under its belt the season prior.

The tandem of Brittany Wiley and Danielle Vaughn have paced the JSU offense as Wiley leads the team in scoring at 12.8 points per contest. Wiley finished with 11 point and 17 points respectively against BC-U and Stetson. Vaughn has been a force inside the last four games, posting double figure point totals in all four games. The Huntsville, Ala.-post player recorded her first double-double of the season against Stetson with a 13-point, 12 rebound night. In the four-game stretch, Vaughn has connected on 57 percent from the field and averaging 12.0 points per game along with pulling down seven rebounds per contest.

The Gamecocks continue to be strong on the backboards as they lead the OVC in rebounding margin with a +5.3 edge over the opposition. They also lead the league in offensive boards with a 17.2 average per game.

Following Saturday's contest, JSU will turn its attention to the semester finals this week on the Jax State campus before returning to action on Sunday, Dec. 12 at nationally-ranked Florida State. The contest with No. 14 FSU will be televised on Fox Sports Florida.
