Gamecock Women Fall At Stetson, 70-52

Final Stats

DeLand, Fla. – Jacksonville State's women's basketball team dropped its fourth-straight game with a 70-52 setback to Stetson University on Monday evening on the SU campus.

JSU falls to 2-4 on the season, while the Hatters improve their season's mark to 2-3. The Gamecocks will return home on Saturday, Dec. 4 to open their Ohio Valley Conference season against Tennessee Tech. Tip off is set for 5:15 p.m.

After a slow start to the contest by Jax State with a 19-point opening period, it fought its way back into the contest midway through the second half. After trailing 32-19 at the intermission and as many as 18 points at 50-32 at the 11:10 mark, the Red and White strung together a 12-2 scoring spurt to trim the Hatter lead down to eight points at 52-44, but that would be as close as the Gamecocks would get. SU pushed its margin back out to double figures on its next trip down the floor with a Sasha Sims lay up. Sims sparked the Green and White offense in the second half, scoring 15 of her 19 points off the bench in the second half, including three-straight three-point baskets during the SU run. The Hatters finished the half 15-of-33 for 45 percent.

Brittany Wiley led the Jax State second half attack as the Carrollton, Ga.-junior had the hot hand in the final period, scoring 15 of her team-high 17 points in the second half. In the half alone, she drained seven baskets, including a trey. For the fourth-straight game, sophomore Danielle Vaughn finished with double digits in the scoring column. The Huntsville, Ala.-product tallied 12 points and registered her first double-double of the season with 13 rebounds. Vaughn was also credited with four blocks in the setback. Zenobia Pitts and Destiny Lane pitched in six points each.

JSU had the edge on the boards out-rebounding SU 43-39, but was turned over 20 times in the affair which led to 20 Hatter points. The Hatter bench also out-scored the Gamecocks 39-8.

Tierra Brown finished with a game-high 20 points off the bench, while Victoria McGowan added 11 points in the win.

JSU and Golden Eagles of TTU will take to the floor at 5:15 p.m. followed by the men's contest at 7:45 p.m. Fans will be admitted free to the hoops DH with a ticket from Jax State's NCAA FCS Football Playoff contest with Wofford which kicks off at 11 a.m.
