JSU Opens Sunshine State Tour At Bethune-Cookman

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's basketball team will spend the post Thanksgiving weekend in the state of Florida looking to get back in the win column after dropping its last two contests.

The Gamecocks (2-2) open their two-game road trip in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Saturday with a 4 p.m. CST match up with Bethune-Cookman University (1-2). JSU will test Stetson University on Monday evening in DeLand, Fla. JSU and BC-U will be meeting for the first time on the hardwood, while Jax State and Stetson will renew its series when both teams were members of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

In its last outing before the brief Thanksgiving break, JSU dropped a 66-52 home decision to in-state rival Samford. The Gamecocks, who held a 32-27 halftime lead, could not withstand a second half scoring onslaught by the visiting Bulldogs. Sophomore Danielle Vaughn led all Gamecocks in scoring with 13 points in the setback. Junior Brittany Wiley sparked the Red and White in the opening half with her ten points off the bench. Wiley enters the weekend as JSU's top scorer with a 12.3 scoring mark. Junior guard Destiny Lane adds 11.8 points per game.

Through the first four games of the season, the Gamecocks are averaging 42.8 rebounds per contest and out-rebounding the opposition by a +4.8 margin. JSU ranks third in the Ohio Valley Conference in rebounding margin. Jax State leads the OVC in offensive rebounds with 74 and pulls down 18.5 offensive boards per contest.

The Wildcats of BC-U are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and will be just the fifth team from that league that JSU has faced in the program's history. The Gamecocks own a 9-1 mark over teams from the MEAC with the lone loss to league coming last season against Savannah State. JSU topped South Carolina State last season, 59-56 in a tournament hosted by North Florida.

Following its tour of Florida, JSU returns home to open its Ohio Valley Conference schedule on Saturday, Dec. 4 against Tennessee Tech. The Gamecocks and Golden Eagles will take to the floor at 5:15 p.m. followed by the men's contest at 7:45 p.m. The hoops doubleheader will follow JSU's NCAA Second Round Playoff football game with Wofford at 11 a.m. Fans holding a ticket stub from the football contest will be admitted free to the basketball games.
