Gamecocks Place 13 on All-OVC Football Teams

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State's Coty Blanchard was named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year and the Gamecocks had 13 players named to the All-Conference teams, which were released by the conference office on Tuesday.

Blanchard, a former Alabama Mr. Football from Cherokee County High School, becomes the third Gamecock to win Freshman of the Year honors and the first since Reggie Stancil garnered the award in 1999 in the Southland Football League. The freshman quarterback/punter won Newcomer of the Week honors three times in 2010, and was also co-Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Gamecocks to a thrilling 49-48 double-overtime road win at Ole Miss to open the season.

Four players were named to the All-OVC first-team, including Curt Porter (OT), Cory Freeman (TE), Monte Lewis (DL) and Keginald Harris (DB). Six more Gamecocks were named to second-team, including Jeffrey Cameron (WR), Tyler Ogletree (C), Justin Kay (OG), Jamison Wadley (DL), Antonio Bonner (LB) and James Esco (PK). Additionally,Darius Barksdale (RB), Marquis George (DL) and Blanchard (P/QB) were each named to the All-Newcomer squad.

Porter, from Fayette, Ala., graded out at 92 percent for the season, and led the team with 81 knockdowns from his offensive tackle position. The senior led the offensive line with 761 snaps, 24 pancakes and finished with 293 bonus points.

Freeman, a native of Brewton, Ala., finished the season with 11 catches for 88 yards and a touchdown at tight end. The senior has started all 11 games this season and was a second-team All-OVC selection in 2009.

Lewis was named to the first-team defensive line after recording 29 tackles. The Abbeville, Ala., native also had 6.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, one quarterback hurry and one fumble recovery as a junior in 2010.

Harris finished the regular-season with a team-high five interceptions, which ranked second in the Ohio Valley Conference as a sophomore. The Town Creek, Ala., native also had 49 tackles, five pass breakups and a team-high 10 passes defended.

Cameron led all Gamecock receivers with 34 catches for 671 yards and five touchdowns as a senior. The Tupelo, Miss., native averaged 19.7 yards per catch and 61 yards per game and posted his best game of the season with 190 yards on 10 catches against Eastern Kentucky.

Ogletree, a native of Griffin, Ga., graded out the regular-season at 89 percent from his offensive center position. The senior has played 672 snaps and has 89.5 knockdowns with 21 pancake blocks and 282 bonus points.

Kay, from Vestavia Hills, Ala., posted a grade of better than 89 percent from his offensive guard position. The senior has played 653 snaps this season and has 80 knockdowns and 263 bonus points  heading into the NCAA playoffs.

Wadley, from Gadsden, Ala., finished the regular-season with 38 tackles from his defensive line position. The junior team co-captain was second on the squad with a pair of sacks and also returned a fumble 15 yards to score JSU's first touchdown in the Gamecocks' thrilling 49-48 double-overtime road win at Ole Miss to open the season.

Bonner, a native of Marietta, Ga., led the Gamecock defense with 71 tackles from his linebacker position. The senior also added seven tackles for loss, one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry.

Esco, from Leesburg, Ga., leads the Gamecocks in scoring with 80 points this season. He has hit 13-of-19 field goal attempts, including a long of 45 yards, while added 41-of-43 on point after kicks.

Blanchard, from Leesburg, Ala., averaged 39.5 yards per punt and also added 296 passing yards and eight touchdowns. The true freshman will be remembered for scoring the game-tying pass on 4th and 30 against Ole Miss and then completing the two-point conversion pass to Calvin Middleton to give the Gamecocks its first-ever win over a SEC opponent in the season opener.

Barksdale, a former Mr. Football from Batesville, Miss., finished the regular-season with 322 yards and a touchdown. He posted his best game of the year after rushing for 113 yards on 20 carries against No. 7 Southeast Missouri State as the Gamecocks claimed a 29-27 win over the Redhawks.

Marquis George had a stellar junior season for the Gamecocks after recording 31 tackles on the defensive line. The Elsner, Delaware, native also had six tackles for loss and one sack.

Jacksonville State led the way with 13 selections combined on the first-team, second-team and All-Newcomer squads, which is the second most in school history. OVC Champion Southeast Missouri State was second with 10 selections, while Eastern Kentucky had eight honorees.

Jacksonville State, ranked No. 8 in the latest Sports Network/Fathead.com poll, will host its first playoff game in almost 20 years on Saturday, December 4, against Wofford.
