JSU Softball Adds Three In Early Signing Period

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State softball team has signed two high school position players and a junior college pitcher in its early signing period, head coach Jana McGinnis announced on Monday.

The Gamecocks have added catcher/outfielder Sara Borders of Alexandria High School and catcher Shelby Holley of Pisgah High School, while signing pitcher Christina Ezell of Georgia Perimeter College to join them in 2012.

Borders, who plays her prep softball just down the road from JSU in Alexandria, has been an all-county selection in each of the past three seasons, as well as an all-state performer in the past two. As a junior in 2010, she was named Calhoun County's Player of the Year, while also earning MVP honors in the county tournament. She was selected to play in the Alabama High School Athletic Association's North-South All-Star Game this past summer after being named the Valley Cubs' MVP.

In each her sophomore and junior seasons, Borders has been named to the Anniston Star's Diamond Dazzlers team, while also garnering AHS Offensive MVP accolades. A member of the honor society with a 4.0 GPA at AHS, she has also lettered in basketball for the Valley Cubs.

From Pisgah, Ala., Holley has been a force in the state since her eighth-grade season, when she won the Pisgah High School Golden Glove and Defensive MVP awards. The state's Player of the Year for Class 3A as a freshman and the Class 3A Hitter of the Year as a sophomore, she missed much of her junior year with an elbow injury. She stormed back onto the scene in travel ball this past summer, earning Offensive MVP honors at the Nashville Music City Hits for the Alabama North Team.

Pisgah's 2010 Wendy's Heisman Female Athlete, Holley heads into her senior season after already claiming first team all-state honors in 2009 and in guiding PHS to the 2008 state title. As a sophomore in 2009, she led the state with 18 home runs and was the only non-pitcher named to the Alabama Elite 10 team.

Ezell is coming off of an impressive freshman season at Georgia Perimeter College in the Atlanta area. A native of Senoia, Ga., she led the nation with 334 strikeouts, while also earning first team all-region accolades and MVP and All-Tournament honors at the regional tournament. Ezell was also selected to the Wilson Select Team that played in Puerto Rico.

As a prep player at East Coweta High School, Ezell was the 2008 GHSA 5AAAAA Player of the Year, as well as player of the year in her region. She was an all-state pick in each the 2007 and 2008 seasons, while garnering all-region honors in three-straight years from 2006-08. She also earned Top Pitcher and MVP honors while at ECHS.
