JSU Golf Caps Record-Breaking Fall By Sweeping OVC Awards

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State golf program wrapped up a record-breaking fall on Wednesday by sweeping the Ohio Valley Conference Golfer of the Week honors.

The Gamecocks, who had both their men's and women's programs conclude their fall schedules on Tuesday in the Stetson Invitational, saw junior Tom Robson claim Male Golfer of the Week accolades for his performance, while junior Lucia Fernandez Valdes earned the Female Golfer of the Week Award.

Robson, a native of Portsmouth, England, tied for fourth in the 45-player Stetson.CFSC Invitational at the Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand, Fla., earlier in the week. He finished the 54-hole event with a two-under 214, thanks to a three-under 69 in Monday's first round. It is the first OVC weekly award for Robson this season, who finished the fall tied with teammate Gonzalo Berlin for the second-lowest scoring average in the OVC.

Fernandez Valdes used a one-over 73 in Tuesday's final round of the Holiday Inn Express Hatter Invitational to finish second in the field of 48 golfers. The Cordoba, Argentina, native carded a 54-hole total of 216, an even-par score that tied her score from earlier in the fall as the second-lowest 54-hole total in school history. The honor is the third OVC Golfer of the Week award for her this fall.

Both the JSU men and women's programs enjoyed record-breaking success in the fall season. At the F&M Bank APSU Invitational on Oct. 18-19, the Gamecocks shot a second-round 259, a 29-under score that crushed the school record for 18-hole low by 14 strokes and beat the single round record vs. par by 14. That record-breaking round was paced by a school-record 62 (10-under) from freshman Matthew Wallace and an eight-under 64 from senior Gonzalo Berlin.

It also guided JSU to a school-record 42-under 822 over the 54-hole event, 10 strokes better than the previous mark and 15 shots better than the previous record vs. par. The record-breaking win saw JSU featured in GolfWeek as one it its Teams On The Rise.

On the women's side, the Gamecocks stormed out of the gates with wins in their first two events, the latter being a record-breaking one at the 36-hole Great Smokies Intercollegiate in Waynesville, N.C. In that tournament, JSU carded a 36-hole total of 578, breaking the previous school record by 18 shots. The Gamecocks shot 289 in each the first and second rounds of the event, both breaking the school record of 291, set in 2006.

The JSU women played three 54-hole events in the fall season and set the three lowest 54-hole scores in school history in the process. Their 894 at the Hatter Invitational earlier this week is the new record, just ahead of their 896 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate on Oct. 25-26 and their 899 at the Chris Banister Golf Classic to open the season.

Individually, Fernandez Valdes turned in the best 36-hole total in school history at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, thanks to a 5-under 139 that was three shots better than junior Astrid Parsson's 142 at the Great Smokies earlier in the fall. After the fall wrapped up, the Gamecocks hold the six of the top low rounds in school history, five of the top six 36-hole totals and three of the top four 54-hole scores.
