Tennessee Tech Hands Gamecocks 3-1 Volleyball Loss

FINAL STATS

JACKSONVILLE – Errors proved costly for the Jacksonville State volleyball team on Tuesday night, when the Gamecocks dropped a 3-1 (27-25, 24-26, 25-20, 25-23) Ohio Valley Conference match to Tennessee Tech at Pete Mathews Coliseum.

In a back-and-forth match that saw 48 tie scores and 21 lead changes, the Gamecocks (12-13, 7-7 OVC) committed 31 attack errors and 10 service aces in dropping their second match to the Golden Eagles (7-18, 5-9 OVC) this season. TTU used 10 blocks up front in the win.

Junior Lauren Harkins tied her season high with 34 digs in the four-set match, the third-highest total in four sets by an OVC player this season. The Louisville, Ky., native also became the third player in school history to eclipse the 1,600 digs mark in a career. She runs her total to 1,628, only behind Brittney Whitten (1,689) and Kisha West (1,745) on the Gamecocks' career list.

Sophomore Alyx Schulte was big on both sides of the net for the Gamecocks. The Cold Spring, Ky., native's 11 kills and career-high 25 digs gave her a double-double for the seventh time this season and the second time in the last three matches. The 25 digs were seven more than her previous high this season.

Senior Caitlin Vorbeck led a group of four Gamecocks with double digits in the kills category with 18 on a .273 attack percentage. Senior Kara Slater and Schulte's 11 kills apiece joined sophomore Stephanie Koontz's 10 kills in that group.

Senior Brooke Schumacher also picked up a double-double with 27 assists and 14 digs. It was the fourth double-double of the year for the Lake In The Hills, Ill., native.

TTU hit just .164 as a team but used a 13-kill night from each Marie Peddicord and Kelsey Gray to lead its offense. On the back row, Allison May picked up 33 digs, while Leah Meffert added 15. Gray led the Golden Eagles up front with five blocks.

The Gamecocks will continue their five-match homestand to close the regular season on Friday, when they take on UT Martin and 7 p.m. They will then close the weekend with a 2 p.m. match against Murray State on Saturday.
