Gamecocks Fall To Georgia Southwestern In Exhibition Play, 62-55

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State dropped a 62-55 decision to Georgia Southwestern in women's college basketball action on Sunday at Pete Matthews Coliseum.

The exhibition contest served as a primer for the upcoming 2010-11 JSU campaign, which starts next Sunday, Nov. 14 against Stillman College. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. on the Jax State campus.

In the Gamecocks first action under the Annette Watts regime, they overcame a 27-21 halftime deficit in the second half to take its first lead of the game at the 31-30 four minutes deep into the final period. Tied at 42-42 with just over eight minutes left in the game, JSU built its largest lead of the contest at 49-44 over a two minute span and looked to keep the momentum going, but GSW fought back to even it at 52-52 at the 3:45 mark.

JSU held a slim margin of 55-52 with just over three minutes left in the contest, but the Hurricanes finished off the game with a 10-0 run to claim the seven-point win. Both teams warmed up in the second half after both teams combined to hit 18 shots in the first 20 minutes of action. Jax State went 8-for-25 in the first half and hit 41 percent (12-29) of its shots in the final period.

Junior preseason Ohio Valley Conference selection Brittany Wiley led all scorers with a 21-point performance along with pulling down ten rebounds. GSW had a trio post double figure scoring outputs, led by Tania Walters' 14 points. Jessica Bivins and Kanita Holloway each finished with 12 points.

Playing in her first game in a Gamecock uniform after transferring from Alabama A&M, Brittany Manning came of the bench to card eight points. Sophomore Danielle Vaughn added seven points and six boards in the setback. Freshman JaDechia Hill was credited with five points in her first collegiate game.
