HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Jacksonville State's women's tennis team claimed a pair of wins in the Southern Mississippi Halloween Classic this weekend.
Using the Fed Cup scoring format with each match consisting of 4 singles and 1 doubles match with the best of five points, the Gamecocks topped Louisiana Tech on Saturday and ousted Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Martin on Sunday.
In Saturday's 4-1 win over the Lady Techsters,
Martina Dessbesell made quick work of Tech's Anna Zurek, 6-0, 6-2 for Jax State's first point in the duel. JSU senior
Viviane Marani won in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5 over Tech's Sophie Heldoorn. Junior
Rafaela Wenzel outlasted Alena Drofeyena of Tech as she claimed the first set 6-4 and clinched the match with a 7-6 tie-breaker.
Jax State defeated UTM by the identical score on Sunday. Dessbesell continued her strong weekend as she blanked the Skyhawk's Anna Winkelmann, 6-0, 6-0. JSU newcomer Raisha Guasti turned in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anna Marie Herbold of UTM.
Raphaela Lima edged UTM's Ivon Simic, 6-4, 6-3. to clinch the match.
The Gamecocks opened the event with a pair of setbacks to Northwestern State and Troy on Friday. Nicholls State downed JSU in the Saturday morning match, 3-2.
The weekend wrapped up the fall competition for the JSU women. The Gamecocks open the spring slate back in Hattiesburg, Miss. for the Southern Miss. Invitational in January.
