Fernandez Valdes Named OVC Female Golfer of the Week

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State junior Lucia Fernandez Valdes has been named the Ohio Valley Conference's Female Golfer of the Week for her fourth-place finish at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C., on Tuesday.

Fernandez Valdes, a native of Cordoba, Argentina, stormed out to a five-under 139 in the first and second rounds of the 92-player event, the best 36-hole total in school history by three shots. Her 70 in the first round tied for the sixth-lowest 18-hole total in school history, while her 69 in round two tied for the third-lowest and was just one shot off of the school record.

Even after a five-over 77 in the final round, Fernandez Valdes finished the tournament with an even par 216, one shot off of Mercedes Huarte's 54-hole school record of 215 set in 2005. The weekly honor is the third of the season for the JSU women's team and the second for Fernandez Valdes.

Fernandez Valdes currently leads the OVC with a 73.5 stroke average.
