Gamecock Women Place Seventh at Palmetto Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Lucia Fernandez Valdes finished fourth and sophomore Luz Armijo Fernandez 11th at the Palmetto Intercollegiate on Tuesday, leading the Jacksonville State women's golf team to a seventh-place finish.

The Gamecocks shot a 303 as a team to climb one spot in the 18-team tournament in Tuesday's final round, finishing seven strokes out of fifth place on the par-72, 5,912-yard Oak Point Golf Course on Kiawah Island, S.C. Kennesaw State won the 54-hole tournament.

Fernandez Valdes, a native of Cordoba, Argentina, finished the two-day event with an even-par 216, thanks to a two-under 70 and a three-under 69 in the first two rounds, respectively. She carded a five-over 77 in Tuesday's final round to fall to the fourth-place tie in the 92-player field. She played the par-three holes at a tournament-best two-under.

Armijo Fernandez was the Gamecocks' best player on Tuesday, thanks to a one-under 71 that got her to five-over for the event. The native of San Juan, Argentina, rallied after a six-over 78 in Monday's first round to go one-under for the rest of the tournament. She finished the two days with a 54-hole total of 221, thanks to 11 birdies, the fifth-highest total in the field.

Junior Astrid Parsson (74-78-79-231) tied for 43rd for the Gamecocks, while sophomore Ornella Arrizon (80-77-76-233) finished in a tie for 48th. Freshman Lourdes Lopez (75-80-79-234) rounded out the Gamecocks' roster with a tie for 50th.

Leigh Whittaker of host College of Charleston ran away with medalist honors by nine shots, thanks to a pair of 67s on Monday. She turned in a 71 on Tuesday for a three-round total of 205, 11-under and nine strokes better than runner-up Courtney Broe of Coastal Carolina.

The Gamecocks will round out the 2010 fall schedule Nov. 8-9, when they travel to DeLand, Fla., for the Stetson Women's Invitational at Victoria Hills Golf Course.
