Fernandez Valdes Tied For Second After First Day of Palmetto

DAY ONE RESULTS

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Lucia Fernandez Valdes shot a 5-under 139 on the first day of the Palmetto Intercollegiate on the Oak Point Golf Course on Kiawah Island, S.C., putting the Jacksonville State women's golf team in eighth place heading into Tuesday's final round.

Fernandez Valdes, a native of Cordoba, Argentina, is tied for second in the 92-player field to lead the Gamecocks, who shot a 297 and a 296, respectively, on Monday. They are one shot out of a three-way tie for fifth and 10 shots behind fourth-place Campbell. Host College of Charleston (+2) leads the 18-team field, while Kennesaw State and Coastal Carolina are hot on their heels with 18 holes remaining on the 5,912-yard, par-72 layout.

Fernandez Valdes is the lone Gamecock in the top 25 on the individual leaderboard after leading all players at four-under on the par 3s on Monday. Her nine birdies on the day were third-most in the field and guided her first-round 70 and second-round 69. Her tie with Campbell's Michelle Koh puts her five shots behind leader Leigh Whittaker of Charleston.

Sophomore Luz Armijo Fernandez is tied for 29th after carding a 150 on the day. She bounced back after a first-round 78 to shoot even par in the afternoon. Junior Astrid Parsson (74-78-152) is in a tie for 39th, while freshman Lourdes Lopez (75-80-155) is in 52nd. Sophomore Ornella Arrizon (80-77-157) rounds out the JSU lineup in a tie for 56th.

The Gamecocks will get the third and final round underway on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. CT.
