Gamecock Volleyball Sweeps EKU In Return To The Pete

FINAL STATS

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team made quick work of Eastern Kentucky in its return home on Friday night, when the Gamecocks rolled to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-20) sweep to move ahead of the Colonels in the Ohio Valley Conference standings.

The Gamecocks (12-9, 7-3 OVC) entered the night one half game behind the Colonels (8-12, 7-4 OVC) but capitalized on their first home match since Sept. 25 to pass them in third place in the standings. The win was JSU's 16th in a row at home, where the Gamecocks have played just four matches this season.

Senior Caitlin Vorbeck led all players with 13 kills on a .393 attack percentage. The Raytown, Mo., native committed just two errors in 28 swings in the Gamecocks' fourth sweep of the year. She also had three blocks and three digs on the other side of the net.

Junior Lauren Harkins picked up 25 digs in the three-set match to lead all players in that category. The Louisville, Ky., native moves her career digs total to 1,542, third-most in school history in just her third season. Freshman Kelly Cole, sophomore Alyx Schulte and senior Brooke Schumacher added six digs apiece on the back row for JSU.

Sophomore Jen Meyer was the only other player with double digits in the kills category with 12. The Maineville, Ohio, native hit. 258 on offense, while grabbing four digs on the front row. Freshman setter Abbey Heredia, who entered the match midway through the second set, dished 16 assists and grabbed five digs, while blocking three attempts.

Schumacher distributes 23 assists before giving way to Heredia in the second set.

The Colonels were led by Lauren Snyder's 10 digs and nine kills, while Robyn Hench had 25 of their 28 assists.

The Gamecocks will be at home again on Saturday at 1 p.m., when they host first-place Morehead State. The match will be the second of JSU's Dig Pink weekend, where the Gaemcocks and the Side-Out Foundation are raising funds and awareness in the fight against Breast Cancer. Donations are being accepted at the matches and on the JSU athletics web site. All donations of $25 or more will receive a pink JSU Volleyball T-Shirt.
