BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State golfers
Gonzalo Berlin and
Matthew Wallace split Ohio Valley Conference Golfer of the Week honors after guiding the Gamecock men to a record-breaking win at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate earlier in the week.
Berlin, a senior from Brasilia, Brazil, and Wallace, a freshman from London, England, were two of the three players that split the league's weekly honor with Eastern Kentucky's Billy Peel. The trio was in a four-way tie for medalist honors at the APSU Intercollegiate before falling to Bowling Green's Charlie Olson in a playoff.
Wallace and Berlin each shot a 12-under 204 over the 54-hole event, one shot shy of the school-record 13-under that Danny Willett shot in 2006 and two shots off of the school-record 202 that Matias Anselmo fired in 2004. They guided the Gamecocks a nine-shot win in the tourney that featured all nine OVC programs, thanks to a school-record 42-under 822. The weekend was paced by a 29-under 259 in the second round, the lowest 18-hole round in school history by 11 shots.
Wallace turned in a course- and school-record 62 in that second round, the first 62 and the first 10-under round in school history. In that round, he eagled two par fours in the final five holes to pull into contention after a one-under 71 in the first round. He carded another 71 in the final round to earn a spot in the playoff.
Berlin used an 8-under 64 in the second round to pull into position atop the leaderboard. Counting Wallace's 62, it was just the fourth score under 65 in school history and featured a streak of seven-straight birdies. After also carding a 71 in the opening round, Berlin shot 69 in Tuesday's final round to pull into the first-place tie.
The Gamecocks will be off until Nov. 8-9, when they will compete in the Stetson Men's Invitational in DeLand, Fla., to wrap up the fall schedule.
