ROUND TWO RESULTS

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. – Freshman Matthew Wallace led a record-breaking performance by the Jacksonville State men's golf team on Monday afternoon, landing the Gamecocks a 15-shot lead heading into Tuesday's final round of the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.

The Gamecocks carded a 29-under 259 in the afternoon round of the 36-hole first day, crushing the school records for low round and low round to par. Wallace was the catalyst of the record-breaking afternoon with a 10-under 62, breaking the JSU records for lowest 18-hole score and best round to par. The London, England, native recorded two eagles in the final five holes to best former Gamecock Angel Monguzzi's 8-under 63 in 2002, the previous record in both categories.

All five Gamecocks carded rounds in the 60s in the afternoon to break the 2004 team's school-record 270 by 11 shots. Their 36-hole total of 34-under 542 is seven shots better than the 2004 team's 27-under score.

Wallace complimented a one-under 71 in the morning round on the 6,841-yard par 72 Links at Novadell to give himself an 11-under 133 that puts him in first place by two shots over senior Gonzalo Berlin. The 36-hole total breaks the school record of 10-under, shared by Berlin.

A native of Brasilia, Brazil, Berlin used a seven-hole birdie streak to card an eight-under 64, putting him at minus-9 for the tournament. Junior Tom Robson led the team in the morning round with a four-under 68, but his three-under 69 didn't make the team's top four scores. He sits in eighth at 7-under heading into Tuesday's final round.

Had it not been for Wallace's round, Berlin's 8-under would have tied the school record for lowest 18-hole score, but instead he became the second player in school history to achieve the mark. Junior Alfonso Otoya tied the fifth-lowest round in school history to pull into a tie for 14th at 139 (minus-5). Sophomore Andres Schonbaum used a 67 in the second round to tie for 20th after his opening round 74.

The Gamecocks lead second-place Bowling Green by 15 shots, while Samford (560), Eastern Illinois (561) and Oakland (562) round out the top five of the 17-team field. The final 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament will be played on Tuesday morning.
