Gamecock Rifle Tops Nevada, Ole Miss In Home Debut

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State rifle team avenged an earlier loss to Nevada and topped Ole Miss on Saturday at the Gamecock Rifle Range as JSU turned in a 4651.

UN finished second with 4616 while UM accumulated 4605 on the day.

The Wolfpack of UN topped Jax State at its home range by a slim ten-point margin. This time around, JSU claimed the win by a 35-point margin. That margin was bolstered by a 2343 mark in the air rifle portion. UN tallied a 2293 in the smallbore.

“We had two good teams to compete with out there, and our kids had a good day,” said JSU head coach Ron Frost. “They're coming together as a team and realizing their potential. Now that they've achieved a very respectable score, such as today's, I have no doubt that they're hungry to do even better.”

JSU was led by Andrea Dardas in both the air and smallbore events. The junior from Essexville, Mich. turned in a 595 in air rifle and 584 in smallbore. Newcomer Sam Muegge finished second in the air rifle with a 587. Junior Brian Carstensen had a 578 to bolster the Gamecock score in smallbore. UN's Dempster Christenson paced his squad with a 576 in smallbore.

The Gamecocks will break from competition for a couple of weeks before taking on Alaska on Nov. 4 on the JSU campus.
